Heritage Gardens Flume Fountain

Heritage Gardens Flume Fountain

In an early post, I shared a shot of the Flume Fountain and the Heritage Gardens and MuseuminSandwich Ct and I promised I would do a post showing more of it, well finally I am getting around to doing that with this post.

Incase your wondering what a flume fountain is, its where the water runs along a structure to the point where it drops as a waterfall, now that made sense to me as I was typing it, but now I read it again it sounds confusing LOL

So I went to the website for the gardens and found this

The Flume was constructed in 2010 after a design competition was initiated by the Heritage Museums & Gardens Board of Trustees. A landscape architect, Stephen Stimson Associates of Cambridge, MA submitted the winning design that eventually became the Flume.

According to the landscape architect, “the design was inspired by the gristmills and historic flumes found throughout New England.” The flume is first viewed from the Visitor’s Center as a level narrow pool that extends to the East. The ground elevation drops away as the Flume extends 208’ until it pours 26’ down into a pool filled with waterlilies.

Guests travel the Promenade into the Garden and glimpse the Flume through the trees several times until finally arriving in the Daylily Garden. From the lawn the Flume is visible in the distance pouring into the pool below. The water garden is defined by native granite stone edges and invites visitors to explore the water plants and garden collection. The trees lining the Promenade are mostly 90 (plus) year old Hemlocks (Tsuga canadensis) planted in the 1920’s by Charles Owen Dexter.

The waterlily pool below contains several cultivars of waterlilies that were chosen to evoke a Cape Cod pond filled with waterlilies.

Some fun facts about the Flume:

The structure is 208’ long
It’s 24” wide
At the end the water drops 26’ into the waterlily pool below.
Is constructed of Corten Steel and is intended to visually tie into the native trees.
The flume recirculates approximately 300 gallons of water per minute.

As you can see in the first and next shot, the pond the water drops into has Lillies which is beautiful, and they have little lego insects around the garden, you can see one a dragonfly in the next shot

And moving back you can see the field it is in

Also in this field is this sculpture, which I though was worth a shot and sharing

Having seen many gardens with water features this one is a first! Never heard of a flume fountain, good sign one is always learning something new.

Like the sundial the old reliable ones made that never age in my eyes.

Lily gardens and water with dragon flies how lovely to enjoy this unique garden, thanks for sharing.

There actually are a lot of Grist Mills around New England. I grew up on Grist Mill Road! :)

That is a wonderful setting to put that flume, usually, they are not so easily viewed as this. Your pictures are wonderful and I had to look twice at that dragonfly. Do you say it is legos?? Ha! I never would have guessed.

I am enamored by your nature shots, and nature loves you right back. My commenting has suffered lately. Could I please buy more time for $100??

Thanks for the views, JJ @tattoodjay

Yes Indeed I have seen that we did see one when we were heading to the Cape, but couldn't find a spot to park and go check it out, its on our list of places to revisit, of course I am talking about a Grist Mill LOL

I have seen a few Flume Fountains, but this is one of the biggest I have seen and in such a beautiful setting

Thanks for such kind words and support ;)

That is COOL. I noticed the flume in the previous post, I'm really glad you showed it and explained it in great detail. What a cool concept and a great rendition of the idea. A serious WOW area for me.

Thanks Man! Just great.

If I hadn't asked Google I wouldn't have known what the German name for flume is, but now I know it and I know that I have seen a similar thing lately during a hike. I didn't take a photo from the other end though:

This Lego dragonfly looks cool 😁

It's old and broken - the flume lead to a watermill of which you can't see much anymore. I couldn't take better photos because of slippery rocks and an overgrown slope down to the ruins and the water.

Maybe someday some one will restore the waterfall there, but best you didn't take risks on the slippery rocks

This place is at the start of a hike through a gorge and forest of which I have posted before. Maybe they will renovate it one day for the visitors, but I don't think so.
Anyway, I just remembered the photo when I saw your images ;)

It would be great, but I don't think it's possible because there's not much left of the mill building, but maybe I'll be surprised one day 😊

Nice shots. It reminds me of a river wheel from like an old mill or something like that. This looks like a really cool place to take a walk.

Thanks for the visit, and yes Flumes are often used to power the wheels in old mills, I know there are some of these in New England and i must explore and find some ;)

It really was a lovely place to visit we plan to go back there again sometime

At one stage I had considered putting a Koi pond into the garden, but that was more expensive than we could afford at the moment, but now I am thinking if I ever get one have a scaled down Flume fountaininto it would be so cool

Great idea and them Koi fish can be quite expensive to buy but i am sure you will find a way to do it in a affordable way.
