Playing around in photoshop - adding Bokeh

Playing around in photoshop - adding Bokeh

I guess this is another post in my playing /bored at home series, but this time yesterday I decided now is a good time to try to learn more of the features in photoshop, and I have bookmarked a few tutorials to watch and learn and for yesterday ist was a tutorial on how to add a Bokeh effect to an image, and I will share a couple of examples

Update What is bokeh

I realized after a few comments that I should have explained what is Bokeh so her is a definition of it

Bokeh is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens. Bokeh has been defined as "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light".

The tutorial I watched is this one which was quite easy to follow

this next shot is the original unedited photo off the camera.

I enjoyed doing the tutorial and trying it out with these two photos, I prefer getting the bokeh when I take the photo, so I don't think that is something I will do to often if at all, but in the process of doing this I did learn a few features I was unaware of and may be able to use them in regular photo editing from now on in so it was a good use of a bit of time and fun learning new things, Photoshop is so powerful I am sure I am barely scratching the surface of all it can do just using some of the basic features.
But maybe if I do a tutorial every day or two I will learn a lot over this time stuck at home.

Her is another edit I did adding the fake Bokeh, I think I prefer this one as it seems a more realistic looking bokeh than the first one

and here is the same photo without the edit

And that’s all folks

Wow! I learnt something new today, lol - didn't know you can add bokeh after you've taken the shot! :D
Now I know... Btw, cool shots! Even without the bokeh... :)

Wow, that second last image is cool.

I was messing around with my macro lens today in the back yard...I didn't get anything worth showing...The world isn't ready for my terrible macro shots yet...Maybe one day.

Thanks for the feedback the second one was the one I was most happy with

With me with macro shots I find I get os many bad shots compared to the few good ones lOL

Yes, many bad shots was what I got today...No good ones...I got close though. I'll get there.

Thats the key to keep trying, its all about having fun, and for me, I think I learn more when I go out and get bad shots, it makes me want to know why and work out how to do better LOL

Yep, thats a good way to look at it. Failure in life has taught me more than success. The same principle works in photography I guess...And most things.

Interesting art form changing background gently, focusing on one element in photograph. I tend to agree your second manipulation looks more natural.

Nice edits. It helps when you are starting with excellent source material! I have tried some of the photoshop tutorials and even with the step by step a lot of them are still over my head. You did a great job!

If you didn't tell it nobody might have noticed it ;)

This effect looks good and this turorial video is certainly something I'll try and keep in my mind.
But I tell you something: the photos look very good even without the fake bokeh 😊

Thanks these ones I never edited as I want so happy with them, its not an effect I would do often I prefer getting a real bokeh with the camera

Yes, I understand, I wouldn't use it too much neither, but I can imagine sometimes it could add a nice touch to have a perfect bokeh just as you want it ;)

I am very unmotivated at the moment and the weather isn't motivating either.
So I hope that at least you will do something productive and take some photos or watch tutorials ... I think I could do the same and maybe edit some of these failed dandelion shots I've taken last week ;)

Right after my last reply I lay down and wanted to search Youtube for watersplash photography tutorials, but at first there was a tutorial for better bird photography, which was very good and interesting ... and 2 hours later I woke up 😉 lol
I hope you didn't do the same my friend ;)

So I think I'll just write the replies on the comments I got, make some votes and call it a day. Tomorrow will be a very long work day, but maybe I'll find some time inbetween to make a post.

I thought so - I play with my brother in law from time to time, but he is a "thinker" what makes me often forget my next move a few times before he makes his. But that does not matter, because I loose always anyway ;) lol

I remember when I first played one of my older brothers was in a chess club and they would occasionally play in our house and I would watch them and I got intrigued so went to the library and took out a few books to learn the game, then one day I asked to play a game, OI think they were like 16 or 17 and I was maybe 8 and they laughed that I had read a book and wanted to play, but in the end one of them said sure, and were shocked when I won the game LOL. never agreed to play me again

Good morning JJ,

sorry for my late reply, but I didn't have much time at work, came home late and then I wanted to photogaph the Supermoon. When I came home then it was too late and I went to bed. This morning I tried to shoot the moon again, but as far as I have seen the photos both, yesterday evening and this morning were somehow fails. I couldn't get my long lens mounted with it's mount ring on the tripod and had to mount the camera, what has made the whole thing very unstable and so the photos have got quite blurred. So I better should have stayed at home and made some comments and replies 😉

🙂 yes, I think you have told me that story about your first chess experiences quite a while ago, but it was nice to read it again and imagine the faces of your brothers 😉

Good morning JJ :)

I think the arca swiss plate I have mounted on the lens last week does not match the tripod head, but maybe I just didn't try it the right way - will sort it out later at home.

I am sure I can do something with the photos in Lightroom or Photoshop ;)

I have none of these things done yet, instead was riding around the whole afternoon. It is warm and nice outside, just as spring should be :)
The only negative thing is that there are so many people everywhere - all nice places at the lake which have usually been empty in the past weeks are now full of people :(

I hope you have a nice afternoon too and have found some cool "C" photos 🙂

Well riding around must have been nice, totally unlike spring here, the temp is dropping going down close to freezing overnight and a chance of rain

I still have not looked for c shots yet, let me go and do that after I catch up with comments

Good morning JJ,

I hope you've had a good night after commenting and dreamed of the letter "C" 😉
Yesterday evening I was so tired that I shut off my computer early and slept until about 9 this morning. I haven't slept so long for ages.

After replying to the comments I want to pack my things and go on another ride - they say it will rain next week, so I have only this weekend ;)

Hopefully the weather will get better for you too, but on the other hand the rain washes the pollen away.

Yeah, I woke up at 5 and thought I could sleep a little bit longer and then I woke up again shortly before 9. I think I needed that sleep, because I didn't have any time in the office this week 😇

I have just seen your C shot post - great :) I woul dnever have thought of a Coca Cola bottle or a Chain ;) But I have photographed a church today and a cloud :) If I can edit all photos from today I will post my C-photos later.

Have a great day too JJ 🙂

I don't think it was cheating - I have also been searching in my archive, but then I thought I might see some nice C-things on my ride 😉 ... and I urgently needed to take some fresh photos outside of the apartment.

That day will come and I think Bahbahra needs some fresh air on the beach too :)
In the meantime I'm curious on her new scarf - Bahbahra will certainly like it and when you go for a walk outside she could use it as a face mask, just as I don't use a regular mask, but a kind of scarf.

I was using a bandana whenI had to go out but now we have a few masks, the bandana is easier but the mask offer more protection so that's what I will use

I have always one or two of these cheap blue one-use masks with me too, but I think my scarf might be more protective than such a mask ;)
The masks you have will certainly be the better ones with an integrated filter. They are certainly much better.

Yeah I think the scarf would be better, we now have two masks each and two more coming thanks tot he kindness of a friend, they don't have a filter but three layer of material so pretty good and all we will need

Ah, I forgot that you have told me a while ago that a friend sews masks for you. They are of course much better than the ones which the people are usually wearing.
