BP 1 DOT ART BLACK PAPER FINAL RESULT HEADER.jpg

From work in progress to end result in two weeks

Today, exactly 14 days ago, I posted this piece as a work in progress. I assumed that I'd be done in a few days after that first post, but eventually, I needed a lot more time to take it in and see where the next phase would lead to. It turned out that dotting a full A4 sized paper takes more time than anticipated. How I could think this would be done in days, haha.

If you're curious about the first part and step by step process, you can click here to go to my post. For two weeks I've been dotting this artwork every single day. In total, I have been dotting quite a few hours, not sure about the exact amount of time, but it's a lot because I often added layers on top of another layer to add more detail. Hopefully, you will enjoy seeing the process of this work.

The process

I'm starting the process from where I left off in the previous post. For the very first steps, please go to the first post, you can find the link in the paragraph above.

I'm not sure if I mentioned it in the previous post, but my tool to draw half circles gave up on me after creating only a few of them as a guideline on the paper. It's pretty obvious that I had trouble following a nice round half circle without a pencil mark there. Some of the circles I've managed to cover up by other dots, but some of them obviously not.

Note to self: Don't be impatient before starting, if a tool breaks and you need it, first buy a new one. Period.

I didn't plan on what colors I'd use and hoped I could make it a color spectacle, in the end, I think I succeeded there because I've used quite a few different color sets. I love how the circle in picture 3 turned out as this was a totally unexpected color combination that suddenly appeared on my paper. Picture four is kind of embarrassing because of the wonky circle on the right, but these should be included as well.

Embracing the imperfections

I can't really tell what is added in what picture because sometimes it's only one color that has been added but not at one part of the work only. Sometimes I had white leftover on my palet which I used to add more layers on many of the already existing dots.

What is worth mentioning, is the last picture where you can see I added black and brown to the work by just using paint rather than dots. I was lost for a couple of days and didn't feel how I should proceed and create the last part of the work. It was time for something different and I decided I was doing to add brown and black paint to see what I came up with afterward. I started to get inspired again and soon I started filling up the brown parts. I decided to leave the black parts untouched. For some reason, this felt good and I like the black in between.

When I was finished, I took some pictures of different angles to have a better look at the details:

And last but not least, the complete end result in one picture:

I think it turned out nice, while I love some parts and other a little less, I'm still pretty proud of how it came together in the end. I have to admit, that I will probably stick to smaller projects for a while because after many hours trying to make perfect dots with only a few real tools, it becomes a struggle and frustration to see how the dots aren't applied in a great way. At one point only the dots added by the dotting tool seemed nicely round, while others were hard to look at.

Several accidents have happened during this dotting journey, I have spoiled several parts of paint where I shouldn't have, but in the end, I managed to cover these spots up by acting quickly when the accident occurred. If you are familiar with creating artworks in any way, you must know what went through my mind after many hours of dotting when the accidents happened. I was afraid it would be messed up completely, but luckily, this doom scenario didn't happen.

I hope you enjoyed coming with me on this dotting journey, for more artworks check out my profile!
