Before explaining the reasons why this important company of digital development and artificial intelligence abandoned the support it had in providing digital technology to certain oil companies to optimize the process of extracting hydrocarbons I want to make a summary of how well digitalization has been contributing so that oil producers can make profits despite these difficult times where it is necessary to lower production costs due to low oil prices.
Even before the covid-19 pandemic, oil companies were already benefiting from all the digitalization and artificial intelligence provided by some pioneering companies in these matters, so much so that many oil companies had managed to reduce the production costs associated with oil activity in all its phases, from exploration, drilling and production of hydrocarbons.
However, despite all these benefits, everything becomes very difficult for the oil sector to continue to benefit from the digital era, the reasons are many, one of them is that since the arrival of the covid-19 pandemic, the demand for oil has declined and therefore prices are lower, it is then the time where the oil industry will need even more the help of digitalization and artificial intelligence, all with the intention of lowering production costs, optimize processes and make this business of oil production really viable.
This is the point I wanted to get to, that is until we understand the profit that the oil industry has been making since before the pandemic, and now that oil prices are low then the help of the companies that provide the digital and artificial intelligence services is needed even more.
However, there are companies such as google that have already withdrawn support from their digital services to all companies operating in oil and gas production.
The step that Google is taking to abandon its help in providing its services to the companies in charge of the production of hydrocarbons lies in the fact that it has a position in favor of environmental positions at a global level.
The google company simply refused to continue providing aid to the energy sector of hydrocarbons with the non construction of artificial intelligence algorithms, since really with these algorithms provided by google the oil industry was profiled to make great strides in the production of oil and natural gas, however, it is thought that with this google option the oil industry can slow down its activity and even reach the point where it does not consider the extraction of hydrocarbons viable and can thus have a world without the emission of greenhouse gases, therefore it would be winning a game in favor of the environment.
It is a very difficult and complex situation for Google, however the company said that it will fulfill all its contracts and that the oil companies will be able to continue using its cloud computing platform, but that without a doubt its advances in digital and artificial intelligence will no longer be at the service of the oil industry.
However, this does not mean that all the companies that provide this type of service are disassociating themselves from supporting the oil industry, companies such as Microsoft and Amazon still provide these services, however this may set a precedent to the fact that the business of producing hydrocarbons is becoming increasingly difficult.
Personally, I think that if the oil company wants to continue advancing, it has to generate full technological sovereignty and not depend on the service provided by these companies.
The other thing to consider is that if any of these companies as well as google decide to stick to an environmentalist sense, I believe that the solution is not to play at the failure of the oil industry, since as I have mentioned in previous publications humanity and the world are still dependent on highly potential forms of energy, if we really want to stop contaminating the planet, technology must be focused on covering the total demand for energy in the world, a situation that has not been achieved so far.
The first thing would be to find the solution for the world's energy demand, to find that alternative and potential energy, which is a clean energy that can completely replace hydrocarbons. After this step, if I believe that any initiative for not supporting the development of oil activity will be very useful for the future of humanity.

The detail to think about is that this is not the solution, because simply the whole world still needs oil, ideally you could use an energy source that could completely replace energy derived from hydrocarbons, but that has not yet happened.
The other thing to consider is that google has suddenly made this announcement just because of pressure from environmental groups, but the reality is that it may be providing its services in secret.

True, only time will tell, as you rightly said these giant companies in no way make a deal or take any action which does not generate revenue for them or give them their desired power.
