GC-MS technique and its applications

avatar

Hello friends, Hope you all are having a good time.

I am in home quarantine from last five days amid the countrywide lockdown situation. I am enjoying my time as I have enough time to write something in this beautiful platform.

However, this is my first post in Project-HOPE and I am going to write about GC-MS(Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) technique and its application.

I have been working in analytical sector from last 15 years. I used to do analysis of different hazardous compounds with different machines. GC-MS is one of those. So, let’s have a comprehensive review of this equipment.

What is GC-MS?

GC-MS is an analytical machine by which we can do separation of different compounds from a complex mixture. There are two parts of this machine, GC and MS. GC part helps to separate the components from a mixture. On the other hand, MS part used to identify the compounds by its mass fragmentation.

Different parts of GC- MS machine

I am mentioning here the major parts name of this machine.

How the machine works

This machine follows basic chromatography technique. You need to have carrier gas to run this machine. Inert gases are used as carrier here. I am using helium gas in my laboratory.

There is a column inside the machine. The length of this column is 30 meters and width is 0.25mm. There are different columns used for different analysis. I am giving DB35 column specification. I am using machine and columns from Agilent brand.

However, there is an injector in this machine. The extracted samples will be injected through this injector. The sample solution will be guided by carrier gases to the columns.

Now, the MS part will start working. The particles will be fragmented by its mass in the MS part. The compounds will give peaks in different retention times as per their fragmentation.

Here is one picture of the components after analysis.

GCMS is used in different industries. In pharmaceuticals this machine is used for separation of different compounds in making medicines.

I am using it in textile industries. I am analysing hazardous compounds like Azo dyes, disperse dyes, phthalates etc.

For example, different colour dyes are used to make textiles. In these dyes, harmful substances are present which can cause cancer in human skin. We are extracting the dyestuffs from the fabric and doing the analysis of those colours. If any harmful substances are detected after the analysis, the goods are rejected by the buyers.

The technique of GC-MS is a vast topic. In this short writing it will be difficult to explain all those critical stuffs.

However, I tried to explain few of the techniques of this sophisticated machine. Hope it will help you to have a basic idea about this machine.

Here all the pictures were captured using my iPhone 11 Pro Max mobile phone except the source mentioned one.

Thanks for stopping by.
