MOTIVATION: A MANAGERIAL KEY

​​Motivation is derived from a Latin word Motus which means a moving cause.

​Many philosophers and school of thought have given their submission and opinion about motivation but most research has found out that human are pleasure seekers and like to avoid pain, so therefore motivation theories have been placed on this two fundamental facts.

​Motivation can come from within when one derives Joy in what he or she is doing without waiting for external factor to propel such feeling. It also has to do with personality, biological and psychological make up and experience.

​Extrinsic motivation has to do with external forces that propel one to do his/her job which may also include force. Some extrinsic motivation can be salaries, working conditions, promotion, good working environment and job terms/condition. If there is lag in any of this aforementioned points, the worker or employee tends to be de-motivated.

Managers are encouraged to study their workers and create the best form of motivation for them.

Study has also shown that the output of workers is sometime determined by the level of motivation they derive on the job.

Motivation differs between workplaces and also depends on the situation and environment too. Some technique that can be used are:

Periodic pattern of promotion
Job security
Good information and communication system.
Recognition
Appraisal
Responsibility and trust
Equipping staffs with enough instruments needed.
Good bonuses on given task.
Good medical provision.
Continual training and development.
There are many theories of Management with its pro and cons but the theory I love the most is Abraham Maslow's Hierachy of need which states that human are motivated by want of their unsatisfied needs and that tends to determine their input and motivation.

He listed the needs as

​Human basic needs/psychological needs
​Security and safety needs in terms of job stability and sustainability as well as other fringe benefit.
​Social Attaining need. Thats means human wants to associate when the first two needs are satisfied.
​Awareness of importance need or the Self esteem need.
​Self achievement or self actualization need which is the peak.

The importance of motivation can not under emphasised in all phase and sphere of life.

Motivation is very key and essential even to the growth and success of a business likewise the fall and extinction of a business likewise.

For sure, Motivation is a vital part in one's life. When it comes to company, it is better you motivate your workers, it will see them putting more effort into work. This will definitely see's your company thriving.

Yes very true.. Motivation is missing especially in Nigeria organisation or I guess they are using the persuasive type

This is quite motivational. I totally agree with Abraham maslov . We tend to do much when we see we have the desire to satisfy our unmet needs. That alone will move us to act.
