Every time there is news of how social media like Facebook uses your personal data or how twitter accounts got hacked it sparks a debate and people get up in arms against it.
I am not justifying how social media controls and uses our data or security breaches.
Instead I am trying to look at other possible alternatives and how we can benefit from social media platforms to increase our reach.

The Usual reaction to bad social media news

Every time there is any news about personal data misuse, data breach or accounts hacks what do people do?
I feel their reaction falls in the following categories

• They read about it and move on with their lives till the next data breach happens and the cycle repeats. So basically do nothing about it. It is just a news that does not warrant call for action.
• Some people take a step and delete their social media accounts.
• Some of us write about it on decentralized/ blockchain driven platform such as this and start a debate about centralized Vs Decentralized.
  However there is another set of people whose reaction interests me a lot.
  These are the people who either already have or if not they go ahead and create fresh new accounts on these social media accounts on sites like face book twitter etc. with the intent to harness the power and gaining from these platforms.

Love it or Hate it but We cannot ignore it

Social media as it exists today is formed with the backing of huge investor money.
A lot of money rides on it and thought such negative news might hurt the share prices but it is not going to kill it in in instant.

Learn to use the social media to your advantage

Blockchain based platforms are only emerging and the more established traditional social media platforms have a much larger user base.
As content creators if we confine our content to only platforms like hive, steemit etc that we are losing out on a lot of audiences on sites like twitter etc.

The strength of traditional social media

Sites like twitter and Facebook have been a favorite hunting ground for social media influencers and marketeers. There are both free and paid tools to promote content on these platforms.
So even by using the free tools one can increase our reach to an audience interesting in Blockchains, crypto and other allied fields.

I talk with the example of twitter because it is easier to reach out to people and new audiences using twitter even if you have only a few followers or your account is new.
Think of your social media account as your real estate. If you have a single room to rent you get a certain rent. If you have 2 rooms to put on rent you get more rent and if you own the building with 50 apartments you earn a lot more.
Similarly you can build your social media account to have more followers and thus increase your influence.
Slowly you can convert the power of this influence to promote crypto projects.
Bring people on board a site or sell anything.

Let us take twitter as an example. First you start by having a separate twitter account where you post things related to your niche like blockchains, crypto etc.
Keeping it separate from your personal account guards your privacy and helps prevent loss of personal info.

The best precaution against loss of personal data

A sceptic may say do not have an account on a platform where it can get compromised.
The next best thing would be to have a separate account with no links to your personal details.
You can only lose what you put in an account if there is no personal information you do not lose it if the account gets compromised.

• Post the links to your posts on your twitter account
• Post using keywords or hash tags. Do some research and you would find trending keywords. Try typing in #blockchain or #crypto or #btc and you would see how the word is trending on twitter.
  By using proper keywords you can reach out to a target audience that is relevant to the subject of your post.
