Five Good Reasons To Quit Your Job

avatar

While doing a research recently, I stumbled upon a video here. The video points out 8 good reasons to quit your job. I am therefore writing an elaborate post on some of the points indicated in this video.

As much as a person may want to earn a living by getting a job, there are some situations or events that make a job or a workplace inconducive for employees. While some of these may be endured, and taken as parts of the job, there are some conditions that are detrimental to the health, progress or mental well-being of employees. These circumstances are pointers that it is time to quit the job.

Here are some of the reasons why you might need to quit your job, or at least start to hunt for another job, in a more conducive work environment.

When There is No Room for Growth

It is not in the intention of anyone to have career stagnation, or worse still, retrogression. it is normal to expect that in a workplace, you get promoted at least at some defined levels, and you get more responsibilities, as well as more benefits. Growth in a workplace assures you of a future in that organization, therefore giving you a drive for excellence and increased productivity.

When there is no defined organizational profile, and promotion guidelines, you may remain in a spot for years, doing the same assignments, answering to the same persons or set of people, etc. This is no way to live, and there are better jobs out there, maybe one of those is really meant for you.

When Your Job Description Has Changed

This occurrence is common in SMEs and micro businesses, since the employer wants to maximize profit and he wants to engage all employees to the greatest extent possible. This normally involves adding to the job description of some of the employees, whereby an employee is seen doing the job of up to three or more people, or the job description totally changes from what he was initially employed for. In this case, you might be engaging in other responsibilities that do not fit your training or your career.

I once worked with a micro organization where in addition to my Electrical Engineering duties, I had the financial records of the firm to work on, like balancing the accounts. This was not my area of strength, but since my wages depended on it, I had to stick to it pending the period of my employment in the firm. When you're consistently being faced with this situation, you might want to change the job, before you lose touch with your career pursuit, or get fagged out on the job.

When You Have a Bad Commute

Living very far away from your place of employment, or having a complicated transportation system takes a toll on your health, as well as your productivity on the job. The longer or stressful your daily travel is, the less time you have for family, nutrition, and exercise.

The side effects of bad commute ranges from body aches to digestive problems and high blood pressure. It may also include mental problems such as irregular sleep patterns, fatigue and concentration problems. Commuters who drive are also faced with the danger of bad weather, traffic jams, bad roads (in some cases), and accidents, all of which cause high levels of stress. It is therefore more beneficial when you have a smooth transport system, or you reside relatively close to your place of employment.

When Going Back to School

For an employee who desires or requires further education to get a career advancement, it is important to go back to school. Studying while working at a demanding job may however be detrimental to both pursuits. it would probably feel like working two full time jobs. At this point, it will be better to get another job that will be flexible enough to fit into your study schedule, since school is your priority for that period.

When There are Incessant Layoffs, and/or You are Underpaid

These are actually two points in one. When a firm frequently lays off members of staff, it could be a pointer that there are some organizational issues, and there is no job security in that organization. Even when it does not affect you, it will definitely bring about some concerns about how long it will be before you are laid off too. To avoid the disappointment of being laid off suddenly, you may want to look out for a more secure work environment.

Likewise, if you are being underpaid or undervalued in an organization, it could also be a signal for you to look for better opportunities out there. Rather than being exploited or living another man's dream, you should pursue living your own dream too.

While these circumstances may affect individuals differently, these are still the most common signals that you need to change your place of employment. Note therefore that it is not a general rule, but a personal opinion.

One important reason that I encountered, which I thought would never get me, was the physical damage chronic stress can do.
Lack of sleep & constant anxiety is horrible for your body long term.
My dentist asked me. What is more important? Your job or your health?
I said at the time, "My job"... he shook his head. But now, being much older, I would say health!

Choosing one's job over health is a very wrong choice. Your health is more important, and you won't be able to work when your health is down, whereas, someone else will take over your duty in such a case.

It's good that you know the right thing now

There is such a great inner fear in people to leave their jobs, it is as if they would die if they leave and so they endure mistreatment, loss of health and all this to reach old age without a purpose in life.

This is so rampant in developing countries, where unemployment rate is very high. It is also very difficult to get loans to start business, so people see hopelessness when they quit their jobs, no matter their educational qualification.
