Introducing Neo-Folk - In Gowan Ring - Hypnotic Transcendence // In Gowan Ring - A hipnótica Transcendência
I am slowly introducing the world of Neo-Folk, without haste. In the previous article you got to know the somber and bucolic sound of Nebelung, now, going a little further into the world of this musical style, before we go to the heart of it, I want to present a group that has a very peculiar musical energy.

Source of the image The first thing that needs to be explained is that "In Gowan Ring" is a one-man project. A troubadour who uses the pseudonym "B'eirth" or "B’ee" and who joins several different musicians depending on what his current project will be. B'ee considers his music as a "Symbolic Folk", something almost spiritual, but with clear footprints of traditional European pagan music and a certain level of psychedelism at certain times. The composer has always valued musical simplicity, but still, given his deep voice that fills the ears and the subtle layers of acoustic and often ethnic instruments, we have the feeling that we are contemplating a kind of sacred mass, a hypnotic and mystical trance.
The first album of the project dates from 1999 and already clearly shows the type of proposal of B'ee. Both the covers of the albums and the lyrics bring elaborate symbolisms and multiple layers of perception. And there, we already noticed a somewhat medieval footprint interspersed with a certain psychedelia in the first song "Two Wax Doll". In all these years of production and creation for In Gowan Ring, the project has traveled to more than thirty countries, incorporating numerous instruments to add textures and sensations to your music. The most striking and powerful album of the project is "The Serpent and the Dove" of 2015, which reached another level of public and even served as an influence for many groups that drank from similar sources. Many nuances and influences can be seen in in Gowan Ring, I can even feel a resemblance to Syd Barrett at his peak in Piper at the Gates of Dawn in songs like Scarecrow or The Gnome. B'ee seems to have drunk from numerous sources: From shamanic mystical transcendence to Jung, from traditional medieval folk to the European pagan sounds of the rising wave of neo-folk. Perhaps that is why it is unfair to classify them as "Neo-Folk" only. And that is why they prefer to be called Symbolic Folk. But the almost spiritual relationship with the earth and with the subtle and unobservable is undeniable, that puts you in touch with the musical style that I've been addressing in these posts. Um trovador que usa o pseudônimo de "B'eirth" ou "B’ee" e que une-se a vários músicos diferentes dependendo de qual será seu projeto do momento. B'ee considera sua música como um "Folk Simbólico", algo quase espiritual, porém com pegadas claras de uma música tradicional pagã europeia e certo nível de psicodelismo em determinados momentos. O compositor sempre prezou pela simplicidade musical mas ainda assim, diante de sua voz profunda que preenche os ouvidos e as camadas sutis de instrumentos acústicos e muitas vezes étnicos, temos a sensação de estarmos contemplando uma espécie de missa sagrada, um transe hipnótico e místico.
O primeiro álbum do projeto data de 1999 e já mostra nitidamente o tipo de proposta de B'ee. Tanto as capas dos álbuns quanto as letras trazem simbolismos elaborados e camadas múltiplas de percepção. E ali já percebemos uma pegada meio medieval intercalada com certo psicodelia já na primeira música "Two Wax Doll". Em todos esses anos de produção e criação para In Gowan Ring, o projeto já viajou por mais de trinta países, incorporando inúmeros instrumentos para acrescentar texturas e sensações a sua música. O álbum mais marcante e poderoso do projeto é "The Serpent and the Dove" de 2015, que alcançou outro patamar de público e inclusive serviu como influência para muitos grupos que beberam de fontes semelhantes. Muitas nuances e influencias podem ser observadas em in Gowan Ring, consigo até mesmo sentir uma semelhança com Syd Barrett em seu auge no Piper at the Gates of Dawn em canções como Scarecrow ou The Gnome. B'ee parece ter bebido de inúmeras fontes: Da transcendência místico xamânica até Jung, do folk medieval tradicional até os sons pagãos europeus da onda crescente de neo-folk. Talvez por isso, seja injusto classifica-los como "Neo-Folk" apenas. E até por isso preferem ser chamados de Folk Simbólico. Mas é inegável a relação quase espiritual com a terra e com o sutil e não observável, que os coloca em contato com o estilo musical que venho abordando nesses posts.
