My thoughts on "Back curation"

avatar

Dear Hive,

I'm trying not to make a big deal out of this, but I want to share my thoughts on "back curation".

There is a temporary situation that has been created by Hard fork 25, that allows curators to basically steal the curation away from those unfortunate to have voted on a post before HF 25. And yes I understand it's temporary and will be over in about 5 days now, and things will go back to "normal".

Before Hardfork 25After Hardfork 25
Curation awards ==>awards being stolen from pre 25

This post by Acidyo has more detail on it

https://hive.blog/hive-174578/@acidyo/psa-curation-rewards-post-hardfork-and-how-you-can-help-stabilize-them

I work hard for my curation

I just want to make one thing clear. I actually work hard on my curation. I don't sit back and have an auto-voter do my votes. I vote with my own fleshy finger each day, spending a considerable amount of time on it. The curation I made is my reward, or payment for my hard work.

Back curation is theft

Sorry, this probably isn't what you want to hear, but I view this back curation as theft, pure and simple. Let's say I voted (pre hf 25)on a post with my 460k power and I would be earning 8 hive on that vote, and then some little guy with 2000 hive votes on it and gets 7.8 hive, well that's pretty unfair to me leaving me with only 0.2 hive.

Hey Neoxian, you should back curate too!

Someone stole my bike, so let me go out and steal other people's bikes. No thank you, I don't plan on back curating. At least, not on purpose, perhaps a few stray votes of mine may do that, but it won't be intentional.

The way witnesses are handling it

Most witnesses seem to have decided to let this situation go, and just back curate themselves, some of them may burn the proceeds or donate it to the Hive Fund, which is fine if they actually do that.

The correct thing to do would have been to fix the bug, and/or possibly freeze the few rogue accounts that abused this in a big way, and/or just find away to return curation to it's rightful owners.

But this is too much work, and it makes Hive look bad, and another hard fork would make Hive look bad, so I understand the logic and strategy of how it's being handled.

I'm taking one for the team

So I'm going to go for about a week without my usual curation awards, for the good of Hive I suppose, just like I got 40k worth of Steem stolen from me. But hey, I'm a big evil whale and deserve to be stolen from right? Derpy derp, whatever.

I don't plan on making a big deal out of this; I'm not going on a crusade.

I suppose I just wanted to bitch in this post.

Have a nice day!

I'm a sinner. By ignorance, still sinner. Writing up my take and possible solutions. This post is very clarifying regarding this situation.

I'm not sure how I would have reacted had I been busy creating content during that time period, all while, for many years, gladly creating something and absolutely adoring the fact my actual consumers share in a cut of the profits my work generates. Then someone who most likely does not give two shits or a single fuck about me or anything I ever do comes along and takes it all away from them. Totally not cool. I'd most likely at least be disappointed, maybe a bit angry, for sure frustrated.

If the tip jar fell off the counter somewhere, smashed, now there's money all over the floor... Who goes ahead and starts pocketing that? Nobody would do that in life, unless the neighborhood is full of crackheads or something like that. Not sure if that analogy fits exactly and of course around here, if you leave money on the table, someone will take it. It's always been like that. That's just how our room mates are at times, I guess...

I had taken some time off before all this though thinking it's perfect timing for a break anyway, due to the history of these hiccups during hardfork time so I haven't been impacted directly. Wasn't even voting. I mean, how can one vote and kitesurf at the same time? And it's also kinda hard to read posts while zipping through the woods on the 450 doing 140. Speaking of which... duty calls!

Hey it's nice to see you. Yes it's definitely annoying and frustrating, but I'm just going to put up with it because there isn't much else to do. I do like the tip jar analogy, that's a pretty good way of looking at it.

Anyway have fun with all that kitesurfing Mr. Swirlyartman.

Always good to see you as well.

Yeah. Same way. Not impressed, but whatever, not freaking out either. More pissed I can't find the funnel I was holding about ten minutes ago.

Thanks a lot for sharing your thought. Yes indeed it is not fair but mostly everyone is here to earn. And this is a win win situation for all the minions and the small Hp account.
But i have noticed few big and good users accounts (I thought they are).
Did the same on of them is a witness itself 🙄.

Good to see your post sir 😄🙏⁦✌️⁩🎉

The situation sucks. It is what it is and since fixing it isn’t worth it when it will be fixed in 5 days the only practical solution is educating everyone and getting more people to do it to level the playing field because if we don’t then there are many that will and as a result will double or triple their account size overnight. One person made 1.5K HP in a few hours. That’s almost as much as I make in an entire week of curation with 1M HP.

I person have no problems with anyone doing it or avoiding it. I respect both decisions.

It will be over in a few days and we can move on. The new system is much more fair for everyone solving many inherent flaws in the old ecosystem.

That sounds like the ultimate degenerate grinder. Christ on a bike.

I’m just gonna pretend a Hive holiday called “Pleb Week” happened.

The smaller fish can enjoy a bit higher curation than usual.

Looks like Robin Hood visited the Hive blockchain. 😂

I understand where you're coming from and I'm annoyed by this aswell as I do manual curation too. In the grand scheme of things though, I guess for most people this is a 'small' hickup, including myself. In your case, with curation being worth so much, I understand your frustration.

This is something that should definitely have been fixed if we were 'mainstream' and I guess we should aim for such standards.

Thanks for making me see another point of view!

I have been going back to some older posts of people I follow for the ones I missed or sometimes adjusting my curation, because I do feel it kinda sucks if there's no curation rewards for me at all this week.

I did try it because an argument convinced me to do so:

“If we all do it then there is a smaller slice of the pie for bots to steal trom during this week”

But it has proven extremely difficult to me to find such posts, do the calculations and choose who to vote for

So I did try it for a few minutes, but then realized that it was mot going to be worth it competing myself with bots, they are machines with one goal and one go only:

“To find the biggest posts with the biggest payout and the shortest period before the payment gets sent for them to vote on them all”

People do can vote on such posts if they have the time to do so, so that they can reduce the rewards for the bots, if a bot “attacks” a post anyways, then It would be better if people get together to make it less profitable for the bots to do so

I'm just here to hear what the whales discuss when they gather. Just ignore me... Lol...

Hopefully, the week becomes history soon enough though.

I'll be doing the same I guess, no need to go back and recast votes. I only make $50 a month or so through curation anyways, but every dollar counts in my household, so I'd rather more funds than less funds, and overall this is a bummer, but thankfully a temporary one.

Definitely feels bad, when you vote with your fleshy finger each day, but I think, at the end, giving it a go is the only good way to deal with it.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. But you are right some people do it intentionally to make their way up, but you are a true genuine person. You support everyone in the best way you can.
Thanks to you we have faith in good humanity. Much Love @neoxian .💖

But there's something more important than this Our Environment I have recently posted Love to know about your feedback.

Ahh, I was wondering why, when I cam back out of the woods for after a week, the total curation on TSU was only 300 Hive... about 1-2 days worth usually.

Sounds like a classic Steem-Hive move haha.

Every time I get fired up on just how awesome our blockchain is for various things, some rookie-level BS like this happens and I'm reminded why we are still sub-$1
