The historic Church of La Merced - Lima
In the heart of the city of Lima, Peru, we can find a lot of colonial structures that are precisely those that make the historic center remains as one of the major tourist attractions of this great city. The main attraction center is the Main Square of Lima or Plaza de Armas, this is surrounded by nothing more and nothing less than the majestic Government Palace of Peru, we can also find there the Cathedral of Lima, these two structures mentioned above have a great infrastructure which I will try to describe and share with you all in future posts.
Now, about two blocks from the Plaza Mayor of Lima going by the Jiron de la Union, we can find the Church of La Merced or also called "Basilica and convent of Our Lady of Mercy"; this place is also a great tourist attraction for those who come to this city to stroll and walk through its streets which are full of wonderful buildings that contrast between the old and the modern.
En pleno centro de la ciudad de Lima, Perú, podemos encontrar una gran cantidad de estructuras coloniales que son precisamente las que hacen que se mantenga el casco histórico como una de las grandes atracciones turísticas de esta gran ciudad. El centro de atracción principal es la Plaza Mayor de Lima o Plaza de Armas, ésta se encuentra rodeada nada más y nada menos que por el majestuoso Palacio de Gobierno del Perú, también podemos encontrar allí la Catedral de Lima, éstas dos estructuras mencionadas anteriormente cuentan con una gran infraestructura la cual trataré de describir y compartir con todos ustedes en futuros post.
Ahora bien, a unas dos cuadras de la Plaza Mayor de Lima yendo por el Jirón de la Unión, podemos encontrar la Iglesia de La Merced o la también llamada “Basílica menor y convento de Nuestra Señora de la Merced”; éste lugar es también un gran atractivo turístico para quienes vienen a esta ciudad a pasear y a recorrer sus calles las cuales están plagadas de maravillosas edificaciones que hacen contraste entre lo antiguo y lo moderno.
The Church of La Merced has a construction in the purest baroque style, a sculpture of the Virgin of La Mercedes is the one that makes presence in the central part of the facade. It is not too much to say that Catholicism is the religion practiced in this place and this is evident in the aforementioned sculpture, as well as those found inside which I will show you later, the large bell tower is also evidence of the aforementioned.
One of the things that caught my attention is the level of detail in the finishing of the sculptures surrounding the entrance, there are about 16 decorative columns in total on the sides of the statues that seem to guard and care for the integrity of this church, the entrance of course has a very high arch typical of these religious structures.
La Iglesia de La Merced cuenta con una construcción al más puro estilo barroco, una escultura de la virgen de la Mercedes es la que hace presencia en la parte central de la fachada. No esta demás decir que el catolicismo es la religión que se practica en este lugar y esto lo hace evidente la escultura antes mencionada, así como las que se encuentran en su interior las cuales les mostraré más adelante, el gran campanario también evidencia lo antes mencionado.
Una de las cosas que más me llamó la atención, es el nivel de detalles del acabado de las esculturas que rodean la entrada, hay unas 16 columnas decorativas en total a los costados de las estatuas que parecen vigilar y cuidar la integridad de esta iglesia, la entrada por supuesto cuenta con un arco altísimo típico de estas estructuras religiosas.
Upon entering the first thing we can observe is the large space in which are the benches in which sit the hundreds of practitioners of this religion who attend this place mostly on weekends, by the time I attended there were very few people who seemed to be praying and admiring the place since no mass or activity was taking place. It is very striking how high the ceiling is and how natural light enters through the glass windows or stained glass, of course, there is also artificial light for the spaces that need it; as well as the entrance, the large arches are the main elements that impact the view.
Al ingresar lo primero que podemos observar es el amplio espacio en el cual se encuentran las bancas en las cuales se sientan los cientos de practicantes de esta religión que asisten a este lugar mayormente los fines de semana, para el momento en el que yo asistí había muy pocas personas las cuales parecían estar rezando y admirando el lugar ya que no se estaba desarrollando ninguna misa o actividad. Llama mucho la atención lo alto que es el techo y como ingresa la luz natural a través de las ventanas de vidrio o vitrales, claro que, también hay luz artificial para los espacios que la necesiten; así como la entrada, los grandes arcos son los principales elementos que impactan la vista.
In the lateral sides of the internal part, we can see large sculptures allusive and in honor of the Virgin of Mercedes, perhaps in the photos can not be appreciated, but they are of a great size and with a great level of detail, it is evident that nothing of what was done here was done lightly.
En los costados laterales de la parte interna, podemos ver grandes esculturas alusivas y en honor a la virgen de la Mercedes, quizá en las fotos no se puede apreciar, pero son de un gran tamaño y con mucho nivel de detalle, es evidente que nada de lo que aquí se hizo fue a la ligera.

Hermoso templo con detalles muy ornamentales. He visto que Lima tiene sitios verdaderamente turísticos y hermosos, la mayoría han quedado como herencia cultural de la época colonial.

It is beautiful. At the entrance you can see how modern and classic styles coexist. The churches, especially the cathedrals, are places where you can enjoy the most art and design.

Historic landmarks are one of the most prized treasures of a location and I'm glad the city of Lima, Peru is also blessed to have their fair share. Without a doubt, the Basilica and Convent of Our Lady of Mercy is an exceptional masterpiece of Baroque architecture and if there's one thing that fascinated me the most, it's the staggering amount of intricately exquisite details at the exterior entrance.
