The Basilica of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá, located in the State of Zulia, Venezuela is the most emblematic icon of the city of Maracaibo and known worldwide for its great and fabulous fairs that start from November 1 to November 30 of the same month of each year.

It was built for the first time on July 7, 1686, with mud walls, a palm and cattail roof and floors of trampled mud. In 1724 a larger church was built, with wattle and daub and tile roofs, with 2 towers and 3 naves, then the front was added; surrounded by a plaza that functions as a platform to present pipers. There begins what is called ¨La Chinita Fair¨ and where the girl who will represent the city in the ¨Mis Venezuela¨ is chosen, the famous beauty contest where the queens from all over the country are chosen to represent us in the ¨Mis Universe¨ and ¨Mis World¨.

Paseo Ciencias, now Plaza del Rosario de Nuestra Señora de Chiquinquirá.

In front of the Basilica, the old Science Walk, now Plaza de Nuestra Señora de Chiquinquirá, was built to continue the religious work. As the space became smaller and smaller in 1970, it was decided to eliminate from the central helmet, two blocks of emblematic houses that were rich in traditional architecture of the region to make way for a pedestrian park.

7 blocks decorated with benches, lamps and replica images of those inside the Basilica end in a great monument to the Virgin of Zulia, La Chinita.

This sculpture to the Virgin measures 8 meters and is on a base of 7 meters.

It is surrounded by angels and cherubs.

There are 3 constructions that were thought and related to each other. The church, the pedestrian walkway, and the monument are well-known tourist sites in Maracaibo, Venezuela. If you have never come to this place, I invite you to visit it, mainly on November 18, which is when they make the descent of the Virgin and many piper groups come to delight with their music while the religious act takes place.

Hello @isabelpena, welcome to Architecture + Design Community! There are lots of nature-inspired elements. As much as the neoclassical church draws attention, I have been captivated by the Art Noveau style butterfly bench.

The decoration of the square was brought from Europe by the then governor of the city. Thank you very much for commenting on my blog. @discoveringami

Like @discoveringarni, I was also immediately fascinated by that exquisite bench! Just by the looks of it, there's a lot of fine craftsmanship and artistic skill involved in that piece of furniture.
