Reflective Hunters: The Great Blue Heron

This photo of the Great Blue Heron’s reflection is my entry.

The Great Blue Heron continues to be the subject of reflections.

These are photos taken last summer when I was walking the Confederation Trail in Montague.

This young heron was staying close to the reeds to hide from the eagle who often hunted in this area. A bald eagle will sometimes prey on the heron’s eggs and baby chicks.

The Great Blue Heron was in part of the Trail know as the Dam. I guess it is a Dam but I only saw the pond of water. It seems to be a great hunting ground for birds with the eels and fish living there.

A reflection of the trees in the same area the bird was wading in and looking for dinner in the water.

I think I read somewhere that they love their own image and use it to see if anything is happening so the reflection is a hunting mechanism aswell do t know if it’s true but I like the idea. You gotta love your own image

I never heard about them using their own image as a hunting mechanism @brittandjosie but birds are clever when it comes to getting food to eat. I now the Great Blue is patient and will stand in the water for long periods waiting for a fish or some other edible to swim by.

I’m happy you liked the Heron’s reflection. They are such beautiful birds and I’ve been lucky to photograph these ones. Mostly they flew off when they see you.

We’re having a few nights of cold weather. Snow seems scarce for January. I could do without the cold temperatures but it has been warming up during the day.

Hi Jo,

yeah, I know they are shy - the few times I have seen one they have been gone before I could turn my camera on 😂

It's still rainy outside, but in the evening it might snow. For the coming week they predict different weather each day, from cloudless sunshine to snow and rain ... we'll see what will be 😉 I will be working anyway and don't have much time for anything else.

You said it's warm during the day, so I hope your day is a nice Sunday, dear Jo 🤗🌞

I mentioned snow earlier and we got a few cm. last night. The ground looks nice and the temperature is above freezing this morning.

I haven’t seen the outside Friday cat for a few days and I wonder if a coyote or fox got her.

We have sunshine today, but it is quite cold.
I don't think it will snow this week and it doesn't look like it would rain either 🙂

We have only foxes here, but I haven't heard of a fox catching a cat yet. Maybe Friday has just chosen to move on to the next nice people 🐱
