Shadow Hunters Contest — Round 142. Shadows on the Postoffice (Pochtamtski) Bridge

There is one constructive feature that makes this bridge unique in St. Petersburg. This is the only bridge that has preserved the original constructive scheme. The other chain bridges in St. Petersburg have preserved the chains only as decorative elements, their construction was changed to beam during the repair process.

The bridge swings slightly when you cross it. The swing is very weak, it is barely perceptible, but if you pay attention, you can see it. If you walk together moving in lock step, the vibrations become stronger. The original design of the bridge was slightly different from the current one, the bridge was swinging so much that it had to install special cast-iron turnstiles to regulate the movement of pedestrians.

The Postoffice Bridge was built in 1823-1824 to replace the wooden bridge that had existed since the 1790s. Engineer V. Tretter was the author of the project. The bridge was repaired many times, but its appearance has changed little since it was built. Except that the new chains are much more massive, and the invisible part of the bridge construction was improved to increase reliability.
