Shadow Hunter Contest-Round 121 - Praying Mantis
This is my entry for Shadow Hunter 121 organized by @melinda010100
Recibí la visita de esta Praying Mantis em mi cocina. Llegaría por accidente, así que deje mis obligaciones para darle unas cuantas tomas hasta lograr las que compartiré con la actividad de @melinda010100.
The praying mantis is an insect that is characterized –and receives its name– by the shape of its front legs, bent and in a prayer position.
Its size is between four and seven centimeters, although there are mantises of up to 12 cm. Their front legs have small spikes with which they catch their prey, such as crickets, moths, grasshoppers, ants, or flies, to quickly start gobbling them up alive.
Here I managed to get an ant and offer it to my Praying Mantis, which delighted me to see how it followed it with its head until it caught it with its front legs, it was very fast and you can only see part of the devoured ant.
Among its peculiarities, it stands out that it is the only insect that has an ear located in the thorax. In addition, its head, which has a triangular shape, can rotate up to 180 degrees, and has two large eyes and, among them, three of smaller size.
The praying mantis can be of various colors, and among the most common are green, brown and yellow. Its appearance will depend on the characteristics of the area in which the skin is shed; if you do it in an environment with green leaves, or if you do it with the fall of the leaves - where the landscape turns yellow or brown. Thanks to this ability they can camouflage themselves from other predators and stalk their prey without being seen.
