— No sé si podré, abuela.

Tampoco me atrevo a matarlo.

In the sector of Los Claveles, there was a family of 6 people who together with 15 other relatives made a total of 21, not counting friends, neighbors and acquaintances who came to the house to ask and wait for the improvement of Rolando, a 38-year-old man appreciated by many, a good son, a loving husband and above all an excellent father. Overnight, Rolando fell ill and became bedridden, as his arms and legs became useless, he lost his appetite and finally his voice. The event shocked the community, as it was not explained what was happening to him, his relatives had exhausted all resources to help him, the doctors did not give clear answers, everyone clung to the faith that Rolando by a miracle could get up and give testimony of what happened.

Two weeks had passed in which Rolando suffered terrible pain from the exaggerated growth of his stomach, convulsions and heart enlargement kept the family awake day and night without rest. Some would make prayer chains for him to be cured and others would invoke death in their thoughts to give him peace.

I believe the world works like a coin, life flips it constantly, and the faces go round and round until they fall and reveal the one it touches, some are full of happiness and others have bitter moments, so on and so forth.

In the neighboring house there was a girl who lived with her parents, her brother and her grandmother who spent some time with them. These people were also no strangers to Rolando's situation, as they knew and heard the desperation of the man and his relatives. But life goes on...

Gabriela was putting on her black boots and trying to do it as fast as possible, but the fasteners were crafty, although she applied all her strength the right one resisted sliding off, when she finally got it she went to her precious bike and smiled, it was time to have fun, feel the speed and the breeze hitting her face. The 11 year old opened the gate and moved her bike a few steps.

Suddenly! she heard a thick voice that made her vibrate.

— Stop it young lady! Before you go out to play in the park you must clean up the yard. —Says her father with a frown.
— But I don't want to sweep daddy! —replies Gabriela indignantly.
— Look girl, you're too little to do whatever you want, you should learn that here we all have chores to do at home. —exclaims the father, with a vein sprouting on his forehead from anger.
— Okay daddy, but it's not fair, all my cousins are at the park and Roger too. —says the girl, crossing her arms with an expression of displeasure.
— Your brother Roger and your cousins did their homework on time and they have the right to go out and play, go sweep and make sure it's clean, I don't want to see you do it unwillingly, ok miss?
— All right, father.

She put the bike away and went to the yard wiping tears from her eyes, she angrily picked up the rake and started to hit an old basket where they kept the coal.

— It's not fair, I don't want to do any of this, they always do the same thing to me, I hate this house, the obligations and this stupid rake, I just want to ride my bike. —She was muttering.

Gabriela was catching such a tremendous tantrum that she was biting her arms, pulling her hair and stomping her feet, causing the ground to shake and a layer of dust to spread around her.

— Gabriela stop it! Make me angry some more and I'll come out and give you your comeuppance. —shouted her father, who had seen everything through the kitchen window.

The girl took a deep breath and picked up the rake again, this time she did it with serenity and began to sweep, although from time to time she looked out of the corner of her eye towards the window where her father was watching her, little by little the anger disappeared and she understood that she had to fulfill her obligation. Suddenly, she saw reflected two red dots shining inside a log that was near the stove, she stopped for a moment trying to understand that so strange, then she knelt down to observe better and was very frightened when what was there moved. Frightened by the event, she jumped backwards and crawled as she could to get as far away as possible, Gabriela had noticed the face of an animal, she wanted to run, but she was petrified, looking with horror that horrifying face and the red eyes that looked like two sparks of live fire.

— Daddy... Daddy Come, I'm scared, Daddy! —she cried desperately.
— What's wrong Gabriela? Your father just left. Why are you screaming like that? —her grandmother asked nervously.
— Grandma, Grandma! There's something there, look, it's moving! —Gabriela replied, pointing in terror.

Grandma crept closer, and although she hesitated to peek out, she hid her nerves so as not to make the situation worse.

— I think it's a giant rat my love, maybe it's badly wounded, maybe it's a bunny, I can't make it out very well, I left my glasses in the living room.

Then, the old woman and the girl took a branch and tried to force the animal out, they rummaged inside fearing its reaction, but there were no sudden movements. The grandmother scratched her nose and said:

— We should wait for your dad, that could be a snake.
— What a scare, Grandma! It could swallow us both in one bite I'd better get on this chair okay?
— Wow how brave you are Gabriela! You better have this shovel, I'm going to move the log and when it comes out try to hit it, hey!
— I don't know if I can do it, grandma.
— You have to try to hurt her, I'll take care of the rest.
— Okay, but be careful granny.

The old woman sighed and took strength to move the trunk, when she did, a swollen toad came out of it, it looked like it was going to burst at any moment, its appearance was disgusting, totally different from its species. Keeping a safe distance, the girl and the old woman watched in horror at the find and noticed something that gave them goose bumps.

— Damn, are you seeing what I'm seeing, Grandma, did someone sew that animal's mouth shut?
— Yes, I think so... What abomination is this, what twisted mind could commit such a sadistic act?
— It could be an experiment of the witch, Paul and Laurita say they've seen her hanging animals on the clothesline, this crazy woman likes to slit chickens' throats and drink their blood grandma.
— That's enough, girl, you're exaggerating! The white lady is no witch, they don't exist, they're just stories to scare disobedient children.
— I bet you my Sunday pay that she's to blame for the suffering of that toad, she's a witch, I believe in them and they have no mercy.
— Stop it! You'd better help me throw him out of the house, he could hide and die in any corner, can you imagine? the smell would be unbearable.
— Isn't it better to put him out of his misery, Grandma?
— Maybe, but I won't do it. Would you do it, little one?
— No, I couldn't take his life, but I don't want him to suffer either.
— Do you realize that? We'd better get him out of here. I don't dare kill him either. Take your rake, I'll use the broom.

40 minutes later...

They were still trying by all possible means to get the toad to move towards the door leading to the street, but it did not move, it was so swollen that its body seemed to weigh 10 kilograms. They did not know what else to do, the solution was to call a neighbor to put an end to this miserable life. Suddenly, the door opened and Gabriela's parents appeared with the month's groceries.

— Dad, mom, look at this, it's disgustingly repulsive!

They approached with curiosity, and suddenly the girl's mother was startled and automatically dropped the bags.

— You mustn't touch or take the life out of that toad! It's carrying something bigger than its own weight," the mother exclaimed.
— For God's sake woman, it's just a wounded toad! the infection is like that, don't be superstitious.
— Carlos, explain to me why his mouth is like that? the infection couldn't sew it up, it's bad.
— Yes, it smells and it's very bad, that's why I'm going to finish all this myself.

The man took the shovel and lifted it before the astonished eyes of everyone, giving an accurate and deadly blow to the animal that made it fly in pieces all over the place, filling Gabriela's face with a thick black liquid. Suddenly, terrifying screams were heard that made everyone's skin crawl, something was happening in the house next door, something wicked had happened. Then, Gabriela's mother knelt down in the middle of a nervous breakdown and asked for clemency, she asked for forgiveness for her sins, while the rest of those present looked at what was left of the animal, they realized that among the pieces of meat was a small photo in which Rolando's face appeared marked with an x.

Rolando had died. Someone commented that it was all very strange, because he was calm and even smiling at his wife and suddenly his belly button started to secrete a yellow liquid and his stomach burst.
