THE SHADOW MAN

Dad fell to the ground again, shaking with fear. It was another night when I found him paraphrasing broken prayers over something lurking on the street. He seemed convinced of a brutal fate for himself. He kept mentioning a shadowy individual who wandered around the block with atrocious thoughts.

For several days now he has been suffering from this state of gravity. Doctors deduce that it has to do with longevity and that the dementia affecting his mind has spread to a stage of acute schizophrenia. I didn't understand much of what they were saying, and in my heart I felt there was more to it than that, because it wasn't sensible for my father to be the most normal person in the world during the day and suddenly, when night came, to become a frightened old man staring out the window waiting for something extraordinary.

My father, before he was eighty years old, was a very quiet person. He liked to play chess and cards with his friends on the patio table where the coolness of the afternoon was more pleasant, but now, every time dusk arrives, a chill drives him quickly to seek refuge within the walls of his house. And then he stands by the window, looking in the same direction; waiting for the arrival of that stranger covered with shadows.

The last few days I have stayed with him. I was too worried to leave him alone in such a feverish state; and even though it was impossible to evict him from his own house due to strong stigmas of rooting, I decided to accompany him and thus take advantage of the situation to try to see the things he was glimpsing with his terrified eyes.

Each time it was the same, but with a different detail. When I felt the cold of nine or ten o'clock at night, the delirium began. My father would place the couch in front of the window and look out onto the street trying to find some oddity. After preparing dinner, I would wash the dishes without paying much attention. I would look at him from the kitchen with sad eyes praying that his condition would finally improve.

However, one night, my disbelief and sadness were replaced by the horror of almost being a victim of a supernatural situation. After dinner, I ordered the kitchen as usual, and after I had finished it was when I heard my father's screams. I went to him immediately and this time I did not find him sitting, but standing and glued to the front of the shop.

His eyes looked like they were going to pop out of their sockets. His hands looked paralyzed but trembling; like the rest of his body that, when touched, felt cold, as if it had been wrapped by the coldest gusts. I held his hand to try to get him to his bed but he resisted, so I tried another method; one that would help me understand what I was seeing and what was happening.

I stood firmly beside him and stared at his face: -Dad, what do you see? -I asked him with a whispering voice, and after some seconds he shook his head slowly, then looked at me in the eyes, transferring to me the horror I felt at that moment, saying some words that made my blood completely cold: -The shadow man is coming! -He exclaimed, murmuring, and it was at that moment that they knocked at the door, giving us a start of terror.

My father held me by the arm and asked me not to open the door under any circumstances. At that moment I was overcome with shock, and I looked at the door again after seeing my father's eyes almost overflowing with tears. However, at that moment I felt that I had to face whatever was affecting my old man, so I decided to open the door to show him that everything I saw was a product of his imagination.

As I opened it, I felt a chilling chill; and I saw a human-shaped mist in front of me. It was very tall and disembodied; ineffable to the point of trying to understand its nature or why it was there. It passed through me and then abruptly threw me against one of the walls of the house. I think I heard my father scream, I don't remember it very well, but I know that after that night I never saw him again. The next day, after regaining consciousness, I carefully searched the house for my father, first entering his room. There, I dug through the papers that were next to his nightstand and found a drawing that illustrated that mist and my father inside it; it looked like he was being dragged into a well or some kind of abysmal pit.
