Cultural stereotype About Gbagyi and T.V people

avatar

The Gbagyi people are indigenous of Niger state in Nigeria. They are known for hauling loads on their shoulders and farming as their major occupation. Before civilization, most of their houses were Hut and they build rhombus for storing their crops. Among other things that the Gbagyi people do is craft and art and they're very skillful in these areas. Our history is traced to the colonial masters, who then resided in kano state, our place of residence before moving to Niger state and FCT during an inter-tribal war.

Nigerians are black, but the Gbagyi people are extremely black, maybe that was from our ancestors, and it became a trail for about two to three generations. This became a belief among other people that the Gbagyi are extremely black people. But Through inter-tribal marriages, they started to birth children with fairer complexion and spread. Though it's no longer true that the Gbagyi people are extremely black, still, people hold that belief that Gbagyi people have no fair people. People argue with any fair person who claims to be Gbagyi by the tribe.

Another stereotype people place on the Gbagyi people is that their women rarely marry their men. People may have noted this among few others to have generalized it to be what happens in our culture. They argue that our men are farmers and are usually unromantic which to them are the leading reason why their women seek other tribes to wed.

Before now, the Gbagyi communities were enormous farmers and hunters, they cultivated various crops and probably were known to produce the largest quantity of yields compare to farmers in other tribes. One of the broadly cultivated crops was yam, no tribe outperformed them when it comes to harvesting yam but that has shifted. As civilization reached, people started to invest more in other ventures and reduced their rate of farming. the present generation is withdrawing from farming. Despite, a reduction in our farming, people still believe Gbagyi people reproduce the most yam. This is not true, the T.v people are now leading yet it's still a general belief that the Gbagyi people are the most yam farmers. Wherever they see the Gbagyi people, they see yam, someone once told me.

On the flank of the T.V people. There's a stereotype about them that "they welcome strangers by giving their wives to that stranger to sleep with". I did not grow up to meet that culture still being practice but it's a general belief among people that the T. V tribe use their wives to entertain a stranger on bed as a welcome from them.

I nominate @zanoz @iyimoga @burlarj for the contest.

How good that people exist so that they can verify whether it is so or not. Thank you for sharing a part of the stereotypes of your culture @dwixer

Use their wives to welcome strangers?
That's the part I don't really find funny at all.
Well, it was a belief and I don't know if it's true or not if you too can't tell if it was so.
Anyway it's good to read about the Gbagyi people, and thanks for the invite

Yeah, not funny but that belief about them is still mention among them. My roommate in school was a T. V boy, he told me it was done among the people of the old but he doubts if it still exist. Christianity and civilization has changed so many things.
How have you been?

I definitely can't believe that giving out one's wife to sleep with. Damn, that's weird.

Very funny of your friend. When you see a gbayi person, you see yam. This makes me laugh 😅😂.

These are some interesting stereotypes. Thanks for participating.

You're welcome. The T.V culture then was so weird, we usually mock our friend who is T. V that we shall always come for visit when he is married. But that was in the old, it doesn't happen again. Thanks for reading through.

You've got really amazing stereotypes in Gbagyi... Civilization has set in, therefore some of those things might not be true again. Thanks for sharing your cultural stereotypes.

😂 😂 You are so funny! When you see the gbagyi, you see yam? Seriously? I love yams o, please invite me to your place na 🙄

That stereotype of giving their wives out to a stranger is not new to me but since you are saying it has long stop in their culture then I think the stereotype has to stop but how? Well, we just have to keep proving ourselves to stop it.

Nice entry, all the best in the contest.

Hehehe, please tell your men folks to be more romantic so that your ladies would marry within your ethnic group o 😄. Just kidding.

Stereotyping people is everywhere and it stops us from truly knowing people. We are distinct and should be treated that way.

I have heard that the Gbagyi people are such good farmers that their yams are the biggest. Again, these are stories people spread. We need more enlightenment for a change of mindset.

Lolz. You need to see how romantic this new breed of Gbagyi are, we are advancing, and for the yam, that was before now
