Greetings to everyone!
How was your night, I hope it was blissful. Please do everything possible to be happy. God bless you.

For instance in Akwa lbom State we have three ethnic groups. And this groups are closely related, in language, culture and the rest.
Now, An Annang person can talk to Ibibio person and he will understand clearly and there are some words he will utter that he wouldn't understand.

Language variation and change is a subfield of linguistics that includes dialectology (which is the study of regional differences in language) Historical linguistics (studies how language change over time) and Sociolinguistics (studies language and the society).

As human beings change, language also change. In olden days the word.

  • 'thou' has changed to 'you'.
  • 'hath' has changed to 'had'.

If you look at Shakespeare book you wouldn't understand anything, so people came up with the idea of interpreting or writing in a simple terms for students to understand and comprehend it.

  • Language occur in different variations. Which are;
  • Dialectal variation in vocabulary.
  • Dialectal variation in grammar.
  • Dialectal variation in sounds.

Language variation and change occurred across the world. It may occur as speakers vary pronunciation (accent), word choice (lexicon).

Cause of language change

  • Migration
    This is as a result of people moving from their country to another country. Here two things would happen;
    Either they establish their own language there or they change from their own language to speak another people's dialect. And this bring about extinct in language.
    Take for instance, I am mobilise for NYSC in Abuja after I am done maybe I decided to stay there and do business for 10years, everything about their lives, culture, language will influence me and automatically my actions would change.

Hello @peckypeace! I agree migration can cause subtle and also significant changes in languages. But can we say migration alone?

Education can also contribute. I know some friends who due to interest in education up to their doctorate level, now speak their Yoruba language differently than it's obtained in our villages.

Their accents changed including pronunciations! Rather than lose touch with our local languages, I'll say we should speak them more so they don't become extinct! 😄

Btw, I read some Shakespeare plays in school and did not understand a thing! 😂 I had to rely on commentaries and summaries from textbooks.

This is an interesting topic. Nicely done.

Thank you @kemmyb for your comments. I would say not only migration could cause language change. There are many other contributions that could cause language.

  • civilization.
  • Business.
  • etc.

Please thank you I really appreciate. I love this.
