Very important that communities present themselves out there and not the boring underlying tech, as you very well said. In the end communities will be joined (or not), dapps will be used (or not) and they will use layer 1 or 2 or both, but most users won't even care. And the best part is they shouldn't be bothered to learn about the blockchain, unless they want to.

Yeah other than the token, does the blockchain really matter to most people?
Not in my opinion. It all comes down to the user experience with what is right in front of that individual.
