3Speak's Client: What It Will Bring To The Table

▶️ Watch on 3Speak

@theycallmedan released a video going over the MVP for the open source client it is bringing out.

This will allow anyone to instantly set up an IPFS node to store video upon.

In this video I discuss what this means for decentralization and the economic incentive it brings to the table. Also, we now can see how content creators fans can be the ones to host the videos.

This is really looking like it will be an amazing addition.

I agree with the fact that people should be allowed to say what they want even if I don't agree. Without this, people will only be in their own echo chamber and never compromise or reason with others. This change to storage decentralization is something that can help promote free speech and is a good change in the right direction.

It really is vital to living in a free society. We are not all going to agree and having only a centralize "voice" heard does not help anyone.

Ultimately, it puts too much power in the hands of a few people which is what we are seeing now in the United States.

I completely agree. Most of the mainstream platforms such as Youtube, Twitter and Facebook are outright censoring opinions. I don't know for how long outside opinions will be allowed. However, I will always support a reasonable discussion over saying that things should never be discussed. Otherwise, people can't make rational decisions on their own.

They are engaging in full blown censorship. Nothing that fits outside their dogma is tolerated. This is a movement that Hive needs to capture.

We really should try to cater to those who are displaced by the mainstream social media or in jeopardy of it.

Freedom of speech is very important but not for that reason.

Freedom of speech is a basic right without which free society is impossible but not because with freedom of speech people will step outside of their own echo chambers and start compromising and reasoning with others.

In societies where there is no free speech, there are no echo chambers. Echo chambers are a product of freedom of speech.

People creating their own echo chambers and refusing to compromise and reason with others (=people with differing opinions) is what happens when people have an abundance of avenues through which to express their opinions. See, people naturally seek like-minded company. When they can do it online, they will. Reasonable debate with those with differing opinions and compromising with them is painful because it involves some degree of self-reflection and examining your own beliefs to find out which of them you can compromise on at a minimum.

What the Internet did was to enable the subscribers of every belief system to form an echo chamber to reinforce that belief system. As a result, there is no platform for civilized debate. There's just different groups screaming and hurling insults at each other and sometimes even propagating all sorts of wacky conspiracy theories.

For one thing, this has caused democratic processes to suffer. But there are other reasons to value the smorgasboard of opinion present on the Internet. It is valuable for like-minded people, sometimes separated by great geographical distances, to come together. My life has been greatly enriched by the Internet in many ways.

I see the breaking up of oligopolies as the greatest benefit of decentralized media. It's a serious problem that extreme levels of wealth has been extracted from billions of people to a handful of people like Zuckerberg. It would be vastly preferable to have millions of people to earn leverage their computers to earn an income from hosting media content rather than be Zuck's cash cows.

Your right, I was lumping things together too much. However, I do think that mainstream media(Fox, CNN, MSNBC) has made this much worst. Especially in the case of how they only report what think will get clicks and their ideology. Because of this and how mainstream media has portrayed has promoted their own ideologies, many people consider it as true and refuse to see the other side.

The first thing someone who only listens to places like CNN and MSNBC asks is which reputable news articles are there to prove the matter because they don't want to change their narrative. At the same time people who listen to Fox or other conservative networks only want to believe what they are true, and this has been proven by how fickle people are on both sides. Underneath all these issues, we need people to function and reason with either side because rarely will we be able to satisfy everyone in society. It has only proven to divide the political landscape and people like Zuckerberg are pushing this to the limits. If half of the country in the US doesn't believe the president (no matter which side prevails), there will be problems when the government wants to accomplish anything.

This is so cool!

I asked Dan on his post, but I'll ask here too...Anyone know if this will work with a Raspberry Pi?

Would love to put this thing to work lol

3Speak was one of the most waited presentation on Hive Fest and the project puts the power of video streaming in the hands of the people. The clients are like the miners and they earn rewards for streaming the content from within to the network and others watching them. Awesome changes and a great way to tokenize the entire view streaming ecosystem and as well to tokenize communities themselves.

I would say that many were looking forward to seeing what they came out with.

To me, this did not disappoint. The most recent posts by @theycallmedan only reaffirm where that is going.

It is great to see something that is decentralised and have no censorship. Just look at Youtube, twitter and facebook to see how things are going. Everything is controlled leading you in the way they want you to think which is not normal.

Hello... The pessimist over here.
Or maybe the realist.
I wasn't impressed.
It's essentially LIMEWIRE on Hive users PCs.

How the hell is that "superior web_3.0"?

So to compete with the mainstream platforms which store over 500 hours of video per minute on server farms running immense bandwidth, the model by 3Speak is to have the videos stored on home PCs?

So when the ambition is to be an alterative to mainstream (like your Alex Jones example) a user will need to have a dedicated room of PCs and hard drives and a high end internet connection with an unlimited data plan. So that automatically means only developed countries can participate. NO HOPE for poor countries. They can't even host a tiktok video.

You say that a person doesn't have to host all the content but actually... DAN POINTED OUT that in order to be guaranteed rewards a user will need to literally have THE ENTIRE 3SPEAK VIDEO DATABASE on their PC in order to have a higher guarantee of rewards.

WTF?

REALLY?

ON HOME PCs?

So then this is the forecast:

It is viable IF 3SPEAK stays as unknown as it is and dedicated Hive users host content that mainly ONLY HIVE USERS upload in order to try to earn rewards.

However,

If significant traffic comes to 3Speak then how the hell is that network going to be hosted on home PCs by dedicated Hive users?

That's why it can only work on an already established network like BitTorrent. But hey Hive severed that option when they ran from Tron and the boogie man Justin Sun.

The only way it can work is utilising that idea from another user (I forget his username) of a VIRTUAL NETWORK/SECOND LAYER where the data lives decentralised and the users hash the database. But to literally need to store it all on home PCs is going backwards with technology. How much data is on 3Speak already? I'm guessing under 1000TB. This is while 3Speak has daily active users of 400.

When growth is the ambition how can it be economical to store 1000s of terabytes of data... ON HOME PCs?

This is a game changer! Finally an app which is going to be able to bring in people of all different interests and purposes. Leo wins MVP in 2020, I think 3speak is going to bring Hive back to the top of the rankings in 2021.

I'm still trying to figure out if content creators are rewarded any other coins besides hive or the 3 coins are just about hosting and governance. I read @theycallmedan's posts but didn't see anything about it.

This is huge huge huge. The tech has been there for ages, the easy to use UI is the missing piece. An easy way to support favourite content creators by pinning their content is huge.

Summary:
In this video, the speaker discusses an exciting development in the decentralized video storage space. He talks about a new client that will allow users to download videos onto their computers, which will be integrated into the IPFS system. This software is open source, allowing for other applications on Hive to build upon it. The speaker emphasizes the benefits of decentralization in storing videos and how users can be rewarded with tokens for hosting content on their IPFS nodes. The speaker also touches on censorship resistance and the power of communities hosting and protecting their own content.

Detailed Article:
The video opens with the speaker expressing his enthusiasm about a recent development he witnessed in a video by They Call Me Dan. The speaker introduces a new client that enables users to download videos onto their computers, connecting to the IPFS system for decentralized video storage. This client, not solely built for the 3Speak application, aims to be a collaborative platform allowing other Hive applications to enhance its features.

The speaker delves into the concept of users pinning videos to their computers, which essentially involves hosting the content. By doing so, multiple users hosting the same video result in its decentralization across numerous nodes. This decentralized storage not only ensures video availability from various locations but also offers an incentive in the form of tokens for users contributing their hard drive space.

The speaker highlights the significance of this decentralized approach, noting how content creators who face censorship on mainstream platforms can benefit from community-hosted content. Drawing examples like Alex Jones being banned from YouTube, the speaker stresses the importance of individuals' rights to express their views, even if controversial. This new system ensures that content remains accessible and uncensored, regardless of mainstream platforms' actions.

Furthermore, the speaker discusses how various communities, whether anti-vaccine, climate change skeptics, or religious groups, can utilize this decentralized system to safeguard their content from censorship. By hosting content on IPFS nodes within their communities, users can ensure resilience against takedowns by centralized platforms.

In conclusion, the speaker emphasizes the key aspects of this decentralized video storage system: censorship resistance, decentralization, system stability, and economic incentives. He acknowledges the need for further details on the economic aspects of the system but emphasizes the potential for rewarding users who support and host important content. The video ends with the speaker expressing excitement about the future prospects of this decentralized video storage solution and thanking the individuals involved in its development, encouraging viewers to look forward to upcoming developments in the space.
