According to Scott P. Richert,
A novena is a series of prayers that are said for nine straight days, usually as a prayer of petition but sometimes as a prayer of thanksgiving.
Whether this ritual can help send one's soul to heaven is what we have to find out from the scriptures.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV) says,

According to the scriptures, it is also written:
Hebrews 9:27 (KJV)
“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”
The only business the dead has with God after death is judgement.
Roman's 10:9 (NLT)
If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be save
