Rebutia neocumingii

This cactus has so many names that I didn't know which one to pick. I got it tagged as Weingartia neocumingii, but I figures I will never remember the first word, so I went for something simpler.

Native to Bolivia and Peru and grows as a solitary plant. How to propagate it? Seeds! Apparently it very rarely grows offsets. I wonder if I can self pollinate it or cross it with some other Rebutia...

The flowers are mostly yellow, mine turned light orange. They stay open for a few days. This one already had two earlier blossoms, but the last few days were cloud and rainy they didn't open properly before fading. No fragrance on this one.

The cactus is not very big, but the spines are damn mean! Very sharp and stiff. Not some flimsy bristles that you can pet. One of those I don't look forward to repotting anytime soon :p

There is more buds coming up, so I will see it blooming for a while. I would love to see most of them open in the same time, but this is ok too :)

You know I am envious of your blooming cacti. I love your collection. They are just super duper!

I visited a plant market recently and they actually had blooming cacti on display. I asked the saleslady how they were able to make their cacti flower. She said they use fertilizer. She gave the name but I forgot it. I'll be going back to find out more about it and probably try it out 🙂

Super duper they are indeed :D

Won't hurt trying :)
Though I don't think fertilizer is enough (and be careful with too strong ones, as the might burn the roots). I am not sure if they give so much of it in the nurseries that the cactus gets confused, or they do have closed environments where they can control temperature too.
Also - nurseries do pump the plants and make them grow fast so they can sell fast ;) Normally after they are bough and go home they need some time to adjust to more "normal" treatment and start to grow slower.

I fertilize mine once or twice a year only. I still think the low winter temp is the main thing that makes them bloom. That's what they have in then natural environments.

Thanks for the advise. I will keep all these in mind when I go back to that place. I'll also remember to get the name of the fertilizer. You might be familiar with it. 🙂

I just did a post on Hoyas you might want to look in. Click here for the link. I didn't really get to answer if hoyas are also succulents 🤔

Yea it is. I think I would prefer yellow, but it is nice too.
Thanks :)
