Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera sp.)

Greetings, all you succulent growers out there! Today I'm showing you my newly transplanted Christmas cactus. I believe I have not seen anyone with this type in the community and this is also my first post to the community, although I've been following for a while. Let's get down to business!

A little bit about Schlumbergera

The Christmas cactus can be found in the wild growing on other trees in South America. Although it is an epiphyte, it can grow well in normal cactus/palm growing medium that you find at the store. They like moist soil but also need good drainage and benefit from being slightly rootbound. It gets its name because it is daylight sensitive, usually blooming around the winter solstice or Christmas but other varieties will bloom around Thanksgiving or Easter. It is easy to propagate; each segment, called a cladode, can be snapped off and placed either in water until rootlets emerge or directly into the growing medium.

These plants became very popular in the 1800s and were bred extensively. Although sometimes it's hard to tell which species you have due to hybridization, there are two major lineages. The Truncata Group is mainly derived from Schlumbergera truncata, which has cladodes with pointed teeth.

The second group is the Buckleyi Group. This group is defined by cladodes with rounded points (like on my new transplant) and flowers with pink pollen.

Does anyone else have holiday cacti? I would like to see more of them, especially their exotic blooms.
I'm n looking forward to seeing the blooms on my new baby plant. They look a little like daisies, which is uncharacteristic of these types of plants.
That's all for today.
Until next time!

I had a pink one, but I have it away. It was growing too big. My mum still has it. She also has orange one, also very pretty! They are such cool and easy to grow plants :)

That's odd. What a shame. I want to cross pollinate mine but they never flower at the same time.
