πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ€ Cambodian Reggae, Yes It's Real 🌴

Cambodian Reggae actually exists, believe it or not. In this post you'll find a few reggae music videos I've selected, and a couple of them are actually heavy hitters.

I lived in Cambodia for over 10 years, and was able to witness reggae enter the music scene there, mostly due to foreign citizens bringing it in, as well as a handful of foreign reggae bands basing themselves in Cambodia.

πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ€ Cambodian Reggae, Yes It's Real πŸŽ™οΈ

Β  Β  Β Reggae has made it's way to every corner of the world, and I would even imagine there's at least one North Korean song with a reggae beat.

Β  Β  Β While living in Cambodia, I was able to witness some of the first reggae concerts, even now famous Ras Muhammad played some of his pre-breakout shows in Cambodia.

Β  Β  Β I've also seen a bit of African artists make the trod to Cambodia, such as Takana Zion from Guinea-Bissau. There are also a few bands comprised of mostly foreign citizens that call Cambodia home, such as Dub Addiction and Vibratone.

πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ€ Sreyleak πŸŽ™οΈ

Β  Β  Β Artist Sreyleak dominates the reggae scene in Cambodia, at least in my opinion. Hailing from beautiful and green Battambang, Sreyleak is busy farming when she's not singing.

Β  Β  Β One thing is for sure, Sreyleak is genuine, and she certainly doesn't come off as trying to act like a reggae singer. I have to admit, all the other acts, whether foreign or Khmer, seem like they are pretending to be a reggae artist.

Β  Β  Β She is best without any help, as you can see in the first video, "Kal Khyom Nov Pi Kromom (Since I Was An Adult Single Girl)," she absolutely nails it, a catchy tune with a righteous message. In it she sings of the various suitors that try win her parents' approval, but her ultimate desire to choose love for herself.

πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ€πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ€ Sreyleak With Help πŸŽ™οΈ

Β  Β  Β In the following video, a reggae/hip-hop rendition of a Cambodian classic dance, the Saravan, is performed by Sreyleak and a few random foreign artists, a few of which I can't take seriously.

Β  Β  Β Despite the ridiculousness from other artists within the song, especially the attempts to sing a few bars in Khmer, Sreyleak still shines, her personality is so positive.

Β  Β  Β This next one is titled "Pel Roleum Srech Srech (When It Drizzles)," and Sreyleak once again shines through in her authenticity, while this Prof. Kinski character is trying be Jamaican, and it is just too distracting.

Β  Β  Β She somehow manages to make the song enjoyable despite her hardcore homey, and I am thankful no one has encouraged her to "act like a Jamaican" in her videos.

πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ€πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ€ A Yellowman Attempt πŸŽ™οΈ

Β  Β  Β This one I couldn't watch from start to finish if it wasn't for the cool Cambodian scenes that make the family and I miss our former home.

Β  Β  Β This song, "Zunguzeng Inna Di Penh," doesn't really carry much of a message at all, but the young Khmer talent shows some promise, I just hope somebody turns him onto some conscious tunes that will help guide him.

Β  Β  Β I encourage you to check out more of Sreyleak's music videos. Most of them are not in a reggae style, but all of her songs are quite catchy and carry a good message.

Β  Β  Β She's a genuine character, and it really shows in her music. She's managed to stay humble during her rise to fame, something not common in Southeast Asia.

I know it’s way more common in Thailand, Malaysia and especially Indonesia, but Cambodia is doing a little too.

Your co-worker sounds very Cambodian. @Sreypov, my wife, shares the same name as your co-worker. The pronunciation is difficult, but generally spelled Pov in English. "Srey" means female, and "Pov" means youngest offspring. So, while you're digesting that, just imagine if your Mom names you Pov and then decides to have another kid a few years later, your name no longer makes sense. I know many Povs in Cambodia that aren't actually the youngest child.
