Interesting Baptistery, Pisa, Italy (4 pics)
The Baptistery of Pisa is impressive in size, it is 55 meters high, and is almost as high as the Tower of Pisa, which is 57 meters.
The Baptistery was built in 1153, before the Tower of Pisa and both of them are tilting.
It is not very perceptible, since it is less than 1 degree, but it still does.
The interior is very simple and almost stripped of décor.
The walls, ceiling and floors are made of white and black marble stripes.
There is only a Baptistery font, a pulpit, an altar, a throne and several columns.
Built in 1246, the baptismal font is the centerpiece of the baptistery.
The bronze statue in the center was added in 1929 and represents Saint John the Baptist.
I would have liked to see what was in the center at the origin, because personally, I find the contrast a little too much.
Further back, we find the pulpit of the baptistery, a very beautiful piece of art, carved by Nicola Pisano in 1260 which marks the birth of the Italian Renaissance period.
What is most impressive inside the Baptistery? The echo.
Every half hour, employees with a beautiful voice demonstrate the echoes by singing a few excerpts from an Italian song.
Quite impressive to hear and in addition, very melodious.
Interestingly, it is not the round shape of the dome that we see from the outside that allows this echo, but rather the interior doubletroof of the baptistery.
