Athens, the capital of Greece, is my favorite city, and I have visited it dozens of times since I was a child. It is the city that gave birth to democracy, philosophy, Olympic Games, and many sciences such as geometry, astronomy, physics, geometry, mathematics, and many other sciences that if I mention them all, this article will never end. It took its name from the ancient goddess of Olympus Athena which was the goddess of wisdom.

Athens combines the glamour of a modern city with the glamour of the ancient city with its dozens of ancient sights and monuments. With a walk-in its historic center, the visitor can feel great awe, seeing all these magnificent buildings that were built thousands of years ago without the help of the technological means we have today. Today, I will write about some of its ancient monuments, and show you some photos I have captured during my visits to this beautiful city.

The ancient Agora of Athens

The Ancient Agora of Athens was the place where the heart of ancient Athens was beating. At the beginning of the 6th century BC, during the time of the great legislator Solon, the area was turned into a public gathering place for the citizens. There the Athenians gathered to carry out all kinds of activities. It was the seat of justice, culture, city administration, and the worship of the gods.

The temple of Hephaestus

The temple of Hephaestus is located on the west side of the ancient market of Athens. It is more widely known as Thisseio and is one of the most well-preserved Doric temples in ancient Athens. Originally it was a place of worship for the Hephaestus god and the goddess Athena, but later it was turned into a Christian temple of Saint George and that is why it is so well-preserved as the Christians protected it. in 1834 the reception ceremony of King Otto took place here and since then it has functioned as an archeological site.

The Stoa of Attalos

The Stoa of Attalos, in ancient Athens, was operating as a commercial center. It was a two-story gallery of shops, built by King Attalus II of Pergamon, in honor of the Stoic philosopher and his teacher, Carnado. At its entrance, you can see statues from the Hellenistic and Roman years. In the 1950s it was completely restored by the Rockefeller foundation and today is operating as a museum.

The sacred rock of Acropolis.

Athens is full of ancient monuments but the most important of all is located on the sacred rock of Acropolis. It is located on a rocky hill 150 meters above sea level. On the hill is housed the temple of the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the propylaea, The Temple of Athena Niki, and other ancient monuments that today are visited daily by thousands of tourists. The most important monument of the Acropolis is the Parthenon where it was built in honor of the goddess of Athens. It was designed by the architects Iktinos and Kallikrates, while the sculptural decoration was created by Pheidias and is a world heritage monument of Unesco.

the wind tower

The wind tower is located in the ancient agora and is the world's first meteorological station. It had 9 sundials and a planetary mechanism. It was made entirely of marble and has an octagonal shape. In ancient times it functioned as a solar and hydraulic clock. During the Turkish occupation, the Turks protected this monument from the well-known antiquity-thief Lord Elgin who wanted to take the entire building to Britain. For two hundred years the tower was closed and handed over to the public in 2016 when its restoration was completed.

. Walking on the ancient historical center of Athens is like being in another era. If you have not visited Athens so far I think you should definitely do it because Athens is a city that causes a huge admiration for its beauty and its culture.
