Los Antiguos (parte 15)
―Este reporte llegó de la BN34, creo que le va interesar sobre manera doctor ―comentó el capitán Anderson mientras transfería a la estación de trabajo de Vicentelli, un archivo de datos.
―¿Qué es esto capitán? ―preguntó Vicentelli, mientras ejecutaba la descompresión de los cien terabytes de datos.
―Revíselo, creo que es una nueva pieza del rompecabezas de los antiguos ―dijo, sonriendo pícaramente ―. Proviene de un grupo de sondas que ha estado explorando la nebulosa planetaria a treinta y nueve años luz de aquí.
El archivo contenía múltiples registros de video de las sondas y datos de astrometría de la nebulosa y la enana blanca que albergaba en su centro, así como imágenes a distancia de otras doce estrellas, de lo que parecía ser el vecindario estelar próximo a la nebulosa.
―Esto es impresionante, ¿cuándo se supo? ―preguntó Vicentelli.
―Hace diez días que llegó el paquete de datos de las sondas a BN34 y hace unas pocas horas aquí ―respondió Anderson ―. En la nave, después de mí, es el primero en enterarse.
―Esto lo cambia todo, debemos notificarlo a los ingenieros para reconsiderar nuestras hipótesis ―dijo levantándose de su estación ―. Voy a llamar a una reunión con los jefes de los equipos de investigación.
El rostro de Saul se proyectaba en una de las tres pantallas reservadas para la participación de los jefes de equipos, que se encontraban en la estación en órbita en el planeta, lucía cansado y ojeroso, las otras pantallas estaban reservadas para Faith Ibraimovich y Vladimir Jordán, quienes aún no se habían conectado al enlace cuántico, para escuchar la información que tenía que transmitirles Vicentelli.
―Esperaremos un momento por el enlace del jefe de ingenieros Jordán ―dijo Vicentelli a los asistentes ―. La doctora Ibraimovich, no asistirá, porque se encuentra en el planeta, supervisando la extracción de una de las sondas del fondo del océano.
Repentinamente una de las dos pantallas restantes se iluminó, mostrando la imagen de un joven de tez amarillenta y grasosos cabellos negros, peinados hacia la derecha.
―Un saludo, el jefe ingeniero Vladimir, no puede acompañarlos, se encuentra con la doctora Faith en el planeta, trabajan…
―Sí lo sabemos, en la extracción de una sonda ―interrumpió bruscamente Vicentelli al joven ―. ¿Quién es usted?
―Soy el ingeniero Matías Reinosa, el jefe Vladimir me encargó que participara por él en esta reunión ―dijo.
―Bien, comencemos entonces ―dijo Vicentelli.
La pantalla mostró la imagen de un objeto de forma ovoidal, que parecía estar formado por múltiples páneles, que parecían ser de material absorbente de radiación. La cámara, obviamente a bordo de una sonda, recorrió toda la superficie del objeto y se alejó de él, para mostrar cómo, a la distancia, podía distinguirse otro cuerpo similar.
―Lo que observan, son módulos de absorción de energía electromagnética ―dijo Vicentelli ―. Según el reporte de los ingenieros de la BN34, se trata de tecnología de los antiguos, nuevamente el mismo tipo de bloques de construcción. Tal vez ustedes puedan confirmar eso cuando reciban el paquete de datos ―comentó viendo a la pantalla donde se mostraba la imagen de Reinosa.
La imagen mostro a continuación un mapa tridimensional de una agrupación de varias estrellas en cuyo centro se encontraba una nebulosa planetaria.
―La imagen que observaron fue tomada por una de varias sondas que explora esta pequeña agrupación de estrellas a treinta y cinco años luz de aquí, específicamente en las proximidades de la enana blanca que se encuentra en medio de la nebulosa planetaria del centro de la imagen ―explicó Vicentelli.
―¿Restos de una antigua esfera de Dyson acaso? ―preguntó uno de los astrofísicos a bordo de la Arquímedes.
―Correcto, al parecer la esfera fue construida cuando la estrella estaba en una fase avanzada de su evolución estelar, justo antes de su transición a gigante roja, se trataba de una enana amarilla, no muy diferente al Sol de la Tierra. ―continuó Vicentelli.
―Si el módulo sobrevivió a la fase de gigante roja, supongo que debió ser desplazado de su órbita original ―comentó Carión, quien observaba con atención la presentación de Vicentelli.
―Es correcto, fue desplazado, al igual que muchos otros, aun se encuentran en las proximidades de la estrella, pero gracias a lo que parece ser tecnología antigravedad, no fueron absorbidos por la superficie de la estrella tras su crecimiento, sino que se alejaron de ella, prolongando su vida útil ―en el mapa se resaltaron otras doce estrellas situadas entre los dos y cinco años luz de distancia de la nebulosa ―. Las estrellas señaladas, son enanas naranjas del mismo vecindario, todas ellas tienes esferas de Dyson construidas con tecnología de los antiguos, todas deshabilitadas.
―Extraordinario, estaban extrayendo grandes cantidades de energía de esta agrupación de estrellas, supongo que trabajaban en proyectos de transformación y colonización en diferentes mundos en sus proximidades―comentó Carión.
―Te equivocas Carión, todos los emisores estaban enfocados a este lugar ―respondió Vicentelli.
―¿Aquí?, pero, ¿para que podrían requerir tanta energía en este mismo lugar? ―intervino Matías desde la pantalla donde se presentaba su imagen ―. No era suficiente con la esfera de esta misma estrella.
―Ese es el asunto, los módulos de absorción de energía de las estrellas de la agrupación, son claramente identificables como tales, su tecnología, aunque diferente, no deja lugar a dudas de cuál era su propósito ―explicó Vicentelli, mientras se proyectaba una vista vectorial de uno de los módulos―. En cambio, los módulos que tenemos alrededor de la estrella negra, no tienen la misma estructura, y aun desconocemos, cuál era su funcionamiento.
―Doctor Vicentelli ―intervino nuevamente Carión ―. La cantidad de energía que aquí se percibía debía ser muy superior a lo que emitía esta estrella, en su etapa de super gigante roja y no se ha encontrado nada que mostrara tales requerimientos energéticos en el planeta.
―Correcto, al parecer los antiguos eran austeros en cuanto al consumo de energía, y parecían hacer funcionar sus ciudades con la que extraían del núcleo de su planeta ―intervino Saul.
―Exactamente, pero los haces de energía no estaban enfocados al planeta, estaba enfocado a la estrella, tal parece que la energía que era recolectada en el cúmulo, era concentrada en un punto sobre la corona de la estrella, cuando se encontraba en la fase de gigante roja, específicamente a la distancia de su centro a la que se debía encontrar la hiper estructura que considerábamos una esfera de Dyson.
―Entonces, cree usted que no se trataba de una esfera de Dyson ―intervino Joel Escobar, ingeniero a cargo del estudio de los módulos que orbitaban la estrella negra.
―Correcto Joel, creo tener una teoría que nos conduce a otro camino ―dijo Vicentelli ―. ¿Por qué concentrar tanta energía, proveniente de otro lugar, sobre una estrella que debía proveer cantidades descomunales de energía?―preguntó retóricamente,
―Porque estaban tratando de detener su colapso …―intervino Carión
―¡Correcto! ―exclamó Vicentelli, con una mirada triunfal en sus ojos, mientras señalaba con su mano derecha, la proyección del inexpresivo, sintético y andrógino rostro del Inu.

The Ancients (part 15)
-This report came from BN34, I think you'll be interested in it, doctor- Captain Anderson commented as he transferred a data file to Vicentelli's work station.
-What is this, Captain? -Vicentelli asked as he decompressed the hundred terabytes of data.
-Check it out, I think it's a new piece of the old puzzle- he said, smiling mischievously- It comes from a group of probes which have been exploring the planetary nebula thirty-nine light years away.
The archive contained multiple video records of the probes and astrometry data from the nebula and the white dwarf at its center, as well as distant images of twelve other stars, from what appeared to be the stellar neighborhood near the nebula.
-This is impressive -When did this become known? -asked Vicentelli.
-Ten days ago the data packet from the probes arrived at BN34 and a few hours ago here -answered Anderson-. On the ship, after me, you are the first to know.
-This changes everything, we must notify the engineers to reconsider our hypothesis, - he said rising from his station-. I will call a meeting with the heads of the research teams.
Saul's face was projected on one of the three screens reserved for the team leaders, who were at the station in orbit around the planet, looking tired and haggard, the other screens were reserved for Faith Ibraimovich and Vladimir Jordan, who had not yet connected to the quantum link, to hear the information that Vicentelli had to transmit to them.

-We know, -Vicentelli interrupted the young man abruptly. -Who are you?

The screen showed an image of an oval-shaped object, which seemed to be made up of multiple panels, which seemed to be made of radiation-absorbing material. The camera, obviously on board a probe, went over the whole surface of the object and away from it, to show how, at a distance, another similar body could be distinguished.
-What you are seeing are electromagnetic energy absorption modules, - said Vicentelli -. According to the report of the BN34 engineers, this is technology of the old ones, again the same type of building blocks. Maybe you can confirm that when you receive the data package - he said looking at the screen where Reinosa's image was shown.
The image below showed a three-dimensional map of a cluster of several stars in the center of which was a planetary nebula.

-That's right, it was displaced, like many others, still in the vicinity of the star, but thanks to what appears to be anti-gravity technology, they were not absorbed by the surface of the star after its growth, but moved away from it, prolonging its life - twelve other stars between two and five light years away from the nebula were highlighted on the map -. The stars highlighted are orange dwarfs from the same neighbourhood, all of which have Dyson spheres built with ancient technology, all of which have been disabled.
-Extraordinary, they were extracting great amounts of energy from this grouping of stars, I suppose they were working on transformation and colonization projects on different worlds in their vicinity- Carion commented.
-You're wrong, Carion, all the emitters were focused on this place - answered Vicentelli.
-Here?, but why would they require so much energy in this very place? -Mathias intervened from the screen where his image was presented-. It was not enough with the sphere of this same star.
-That's the thing, the energy absorption modules of the stars in the grouping are clearly identifiable as such, their technology, although different, leaves no doubt as to what their purpose was, -explained Vicentelli, while a vector view of one of the modules was projected-. On the other hand, the modules that we have around the black star do not have the same structure, and we still do not know how it worked.
-Doctor Vicentelli, -Carion intervened again-. The amount of energy perceived here must have been much higher than that emitted by this star in its stage as a red super giant, and nothing has been found that shows such energy requirements on the planet.
-Correct, it appears that the ancients were austere in their consumption of energy, and they seemed to run their cities on what they extracted from the core of their planet, -Saul intervened.
-Exactly, but the energy beams were not focused on the planet, they were focused on the star, so it seems that the energy that was collected in the grouping, was concentrated in a point on the crown of the star, when it was in the red giant phase, specifically at the distance from its center where the hyper structure that we consider a Dyson's sphere was to be found.
-So you think it wasn't a Dyson sphere -Joel Escobar, the engineer in charge of the study of the modules that orbited the black star, intervened.
-Right, Joel, I think I have a theory which leads us to another path -said Vicentelli- Why concentrate so much energy from somewhere else on a star which was supposed to provide enormous amounts of energy? -he asked rhetorically,
-Because they were trying to stop its collapse... -Carion intervened
-Right! -exclaimed Vicentelli, with a triumphant look in his eyes, as he pointed with his right hand to the projection of the inexpressive, synthetic and androgynous face of the Inu.
