My Top 3 Oscar Winning Movies

I am quite the movie buff and spent a fair bit of cash each year to see movies on the big screen but as of this year I've only been to the cinemas twice once to see Bad Boys 4 Life prior to our lockdown and after our lockdown, I went to seen TENET. While Bad Boys was a pretty crappy reboot I would say TENET was one of the best movies I have seen in ages.

Other than that, I've had to be content with whatever Netflix puts out which isn't all that great so it's been a tough year for enjoying a good movie. In fact, I've stopped watching movies for many months this year and when I do I would look at classics I have not seen, one of them was Full Metal Jacket, which was absolutely brilliant, Kubrick is a freaking genius.

So as we reflect on good movies this month, here are my favourite Oscar-winning movies. Gosh, this post has given me a hankering for popcorn and a slushie.

My Favourite Oscar-Winning Movies

My Nominations are:

Nomination Number One

Gladiator (2001)

My Reasons for the Nomination

Gladiator is the story of Rome in its final years before its collapse, the great empire has reached its tipping point and conquered most of Europe and now enjoy the fruits of the labour, they become soft and consumed with politics and bread and circus, kind of like what we see today. Rome is then turned upside down through the actions of one man who was lined up to take the thrown and double classed and sent down a path of vengeance.

Only have the power to amuse the mob in battle he takes on the Emporer in a battle of wits and swords. The movie is an absolute joy to watch, brutal and gory but a joy. The dialogue is fantastic, the score is brilliant and the acting is top-notch.

I've seen this movie so many times and it never gets old.

Nomination Number Two

The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003)

My Reasons for the Nomination

The final instalment in the epic LOTR trilogy, I don't even think I need to give a reason this movie is mind-blowing the visuals, the acting, the score, the twists and turns as they wrap up a 7-hour story with the final 3 hours. This movie is long as hell but worth every minute.

Nomination Number Three

Rocky (1976)

My Reasons for the Nomination

The movie that took the 80s montage to the absolute pinnacle, the story revolves around everyone's favourite underdog. The movie has made Rocky a cult hero and spawned a massive movie franchise in the process and you can see why after the first. The dialogue might not be the best but the acting is so good and you really feel for Rocky as he tries to pursue his dreams. I think everyone can relate to the struggle.

Oh, and I can't fault the soundtrack that has stood the rest of time.

Only if you don't talk during the movie and ask why stuff is happening. We only discuss afterwards, during the movie you stay quiet as a mouse lol

Some solid choices here @chekohler! I remember going to see Gladiator in the theater when I was in college with a bunch of friends from my dorm. Definitely an entertaining flick. Rocky of course is such a classic. Especially as a fitness coach, it is fun to go back and watch some of those training scenes. Plus my mom grew up just outside of Philadelphia, so I remember going to visit family not far from where some of those iconic scenes were filmed. I really need to give LOTR more of a chance. I just have a hard time watching movies over two hours long. I know I've seen parts of each of them, but tend to fall asleep before the end. Maybe I just need to start watching in the morning as opposed to the evening. 🤣 The books however, no problem digging in and reading those.

I never got to see any of these in the cinema because I don't know maybe I was too young I can't remember, would have loved to get the real cinematic experience. I did see the Matrix in cinema in 99 which was freaking epic.

Oh, sweet, and did you at least get a Philly cheese steak? You need the calories if you're going to run the rocky mile.

You should do it like my mum did and watch it in 30 min bursts like its a series lol should take you two weeks or so but you'll get there. The books are even more content lol but really the visuals and acting make it worth checking out even if the books are better

I don't go to the theater often, but usually make it count when I do so Gladiator was a good one to see on the big screen. Though somehow I think I was one of the only people on the planet who didn't see Avatar in theaters. 🤷‍♀️

I actually did eat a few Philly cheesesteaks in my youth. It was a favorite of my dads. I would like to go back and visit as an adult at some point, though I don't think we have much family left in the area now.

And good call on the 30 minute bursts, haha! Brilliant! That might just be the way to go.

Lol I am in your camp, I never saw Avatar in theatres either, but I did get to watch it in 3D and the visual were pretty epic, I've yet to see a 3D movie that was worth seeing in 3D other than Avatar

You should do a vegan version of the Philly cheesesteak or is that sacrilege that would get you cancelled?

Hhhhmmm, now there's a thought. Definitely not sacrilege--if anything you get extra stamps on your "vegan" card for veganizing typical meals like that in an epic way, hahaha!

An Oscar winning post if you ask me! These are absolute classics and were huge at our school before going to Uni, some of the jocks even had "Gladiator speech-offs" they were that obsessed with the movie. I remember seeing LotR at the cinema and it was mind blowing with all the special effects at the time and the story. It was a long film and you felt like you were the one who threw the ring in Mount Doom you were that knackered at the end of it!

Thanks for being involved in the final contest, good luck!

I've still yet to watch Lord Of The Rings, any of them. Had you not mentioned Gladiator, I wouldn't have considered it but that's definitely worthy of a top 3.

Nice selections @checkohler.

You should take a weekend and buy tonnes of popcorn and perhaps some caffeine and do yourself the favour of knocking out the TLOR trilogy and perhaps the hobbit 3 films too, well worth it

Which one is your favourite of the 3?

I would not choose any, all three are excellent; What's more, I have a list of good movies that I always have in memory, but if you tell me choose just one, I would choose The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003) for the story, the answer and the story of the writer; Did you know that the actor who played Saruman was the only one who knew J. R. R. Tolkien in life

Gosh! Rocky. My word. IMO, the best thing about that film was the theme tune. But then, I'm a chick girl. I have seen Gladiator and didn't like it - probably for the same reason I didn't like Rocky. Violence. Oh, dear, so boring... Anyhow... As far as LOTR - I haven't seen it because I have read and re-read the books and am scared the movie won't live up to my teen imagination... lol. Good luck with the contest!

Oh, indeed Gladiator is pretty brutal, pretty sure it's not as gory as what it was really like to live in Roman times but who knows? I don't think rocky was that bad, the fights don't make up the entire movie, and it offers more than just seeing Sly get punched in the face lol.

Oh I can only imagine, I haven't read the books myself, so I guess I can always ruin the movies later in life lol

LOL! I think I was too young when I saw it. And the man mumbles........never mind the dialogue...Kinda makes me want to ask Wot dialogue?
