We all know Down syndrome, we all know at least one person with this chromosome alteration, which gives them particular physical characteristics that distinguish them and allow us to recognize their condition quickly, it turns out that a few years ago and thanks to social networks a cat named Grumpy, who died in 2019, opened the doors for other cats with similar factions to create a trend to give a second chance to cats with factions a little different from the usual in cats, in the same way, it has been said that these specimens suffer from Down Syndrome, I imagine the face of many when reading these lines, What Down Syndrome in Cats? , WTF? so I will dedicate this publication to share with you what I investigated and discovered when I found out about the existence of these kittens that according to some publications suffered from Down syndrome, so if you want to know more stay and continue reading, by the way happy #caturday!
As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, there are some cats with certain characteristics similar to those presented by people with Down syndrome, such as dwarfism, behavior, lack of balance or immaturity, but these characteristics may be due to different factors, the question that everyone should keep in mind is, can cats really have Down syndrome? All the articles say no, the reason is the following: Humans have 23 chromosomes, while cats have 19, so it is impossible for cats to have an extra chromosome 21. This being so, the only species that could develop Down syndrome, besides humans, are primates, and this is due to the similarity of their chromosomes with us, since they coincide in 98%.
So, there are no cats with Down Syndrome, now that their humans have taken advantage of their nice special features and that they have been and are a success in social networks is another issue, but these characteristics may be due to other factors in the case of Grumpy it was due to his dwarfism, but most of these cats that are still beautiful, at least in my eyes, for their particular features, what they have are genetic anomalies that could be congenital and therefore have these features smaller than average head, squinting eyes or with strabismus and far apart, in addition to the absence of nasal bridge.
On this issue of these felines having accounts on social networks and that their content ends up being monetized, it was criticized, but I think and it is my very personal opinion, that if that money was used and used for the benefit of the animal itself as food, veterinarian, or in that of their humans who are who care for them I see it well to some extent, it is acceptable to me, but the best part of this, is that it has encouraged people to give a second chance and a home for animals that normally had no chance because of their appearance, just for the fact of looking different.
Finally, I can only share some collage images made by me with the help of an application on the cover so you can appreciate the beauty of these felines, so the rest of the images are illustrative to enrich the publication. If you liked my publication please leave me a comment,
