Oops! I did it again: Wookie's story (so far)
Damn, the shelter woman knows I am a sucker for black cats. My first cats were black and I miss having a black cat around the place. A week ago, she showed me this little one and the first thing it did was hiss at us.
That's Wookie's mother on the right. I don't know if Wookie is a male or female yet, s/he doesn't like being held, for a very good reason, so I'm not going to push it, although the shelter owner said she thinks he is a male. She named him Yoda but since I already have a Yoda, I decided to keep to the Star Wars theme and call this hairy little mess Wookie.
Wookie's mother was brought in along with 2 kittens, one of which was dying and Wookie had been branded a "witch kitten" and blamed for causing the death of the others - there were originally more than 2 - although it's more likely that the kittens weren't being fed properly and died from that: Wookie was skin and bones and smaller than the kitten that died. So s/he may be the runt of the litter or was just smaller from mistreatment. It's so sad to see the level of prejudice that is still attached to black cats where I live.
Mom cat has been spayed and is waiting for her owner to collect her in the next few days. Her owner loves her and she doesn't fear people and Wookie is being kept with her until she goes and then he will come to me. His mother's presence calms him and there has been a lot of progress in the past week: no more hissing and a more relaxed curiosity and little paw pats and you can stroke him.
Because he's black, Wookie's chances of being homed are not good and the shelter owner doesn't have the time to put in the extra work that will be needed to fully socialise this poor little kitten so I am going to give him a home. I hope he and Peanut will bond and enjoy each other. Peanut loves his uncles but he does tire them out with his endless antics and he drives the old lady of the house crazy.
Here's Peanut yawning and taking over the space where I normally keep my keyboard. That's because he is the king of the house and I really hope that these two little mistreated souls will enjoy each other. Peanut was also very traumatised when I got him and although he is cuddly and trusting with me, he won't let anyone else touch him. That's ok, I like having him all to myself.

You are doing a noble thing taking in another cat.. How many to you have now cat lady? lol
I am back to 6. I keep telling myself not to but....
I still have a lot of catching up to get to your level, I think 😉
I'm NOT sorry I took them in but gets a little more stressful as time goes on..6 is manageable.. Depends on the personalities but it was better when I had 7.. the 7 all got along ..where now Scary Mary has changed the chemistry..
Yes, it just takes 1 to upset all the others
Also, sorry for not replying to you question a while ago. I didn't want to start a conversation on someone else's post and thought to do my own post but then life got in the way
Feel free to express or not.. hope things are getting better in SA so good life can get in the way..
Things are not getting better but we soldier on .
I have reduced my work hours and I am taking the plunge of running the online business by myself after the person I was doing it with emigrated and handed everything over to me. At least I can be home more
@nikv ))) Good to see you doing some Hive posting..I never thanked you for recognizing my posts ..and getting me up-votes ))) It certainly encourages me to make more.. Thank you
This whole pandemic thing stinks.. especially when Ivermectin was available but then that would kill a 40 billion dollar cold remedy industry just in the US..
It's a pleasure :)
Well, to be honest, I'm not convinced by Ivermectin although it is being used here. I'll stick to using it on the cats for fleas. Here, the biggest issue is that local government has simply allowed the infrastructure to fall apart and we are struggling to get basics like water and electricity.
It was a problem that simply escalated with the pandemic although that has also boosted online shops here, we were behind when it came to mass-adoption but having a working e-commerce platform has helped me and I plan to expand my stock
Peanut is getting really big and long!! Just like my cats! One day they suddenly grow up!
That little black kitten is very cute and smart!
Hope they would get along nicely.
Peanut is lovely! A little bundle of dynamite. I think a friend closer to his own age will be good for him
Poor little Wookie. I think s/he will have a lot of fun with Peanut. Also great shot of him yawning! I love seeing cats' teeth haha! I'm giving away one of my cats, Jango, to my sister. I feel bad abandoning him but I think it will be better for him over there being the center of attention.
Thank you. Is Jango not getting along with Leia at all?
They get along but sometimes Leia, his mom, chases him and he hisses at her and they fight a little bit. Sometimes she's playing but I'm not sure other times...
That sounds fairly normal.
Oh that's very reassuring!
meow!
He's very cute !!! Will grow up handsome!
And the cat is also beautiful, with blue eyes!
And it seems to me that it is smoky.
I also think he could be smoky although I am wondering if the brown on his body coat comes from being so thin and undernourished. It seems he will have very long hair.
Small black kittens sometimes have a brown tint, but it fades with age.
Can he mix with Maine Coon?
Who knows what he is mixed with although Maine Coons are less common in my country. His mother is a tabby cat with the Siamese albino coat gene, you can see her next to him
Thank you for taking Wookie in. He's irresistible. I'm so happy he has a home. Has he come to you yet?
Sorry, I missed your comment :( I've had him for a week and he's settling in well
