Woods, a River and Craft Beer

I'm fond of enjoying my beers with a touch of adventure beyond mere sampling of the Czech national beverage. Luckily, I live in one of the best countries for beer-centric voyages. Yesterday beckoned for just such a trip – the weather resembled summer rather than mid-spring, urging Czechs, known for their love of the outdoors, to hop on their bikes or put their fancy trekking boots on (yes, here, our outdoor outfit is the fancy one) and hit the country roads. Country roads take us from home to the place we belong – to a craft microbrewery somewhere outside Prague. Beer (and pollen) was in the air everywhere I looked around… But enough with the pop-music references; now on a more serious note.

Zajít si jen tak do nejbližšího řemeslného pivovaru, a že jich v Praze je požehnaně, není to pravé ořechové. Ochutnávku si mnohem víc užijete, když si to pivo nejprve zasloužíte. A v počasí, jaké bylo včera, se snad rozumí samo sebou, že správný Čech vyrazí někam do přírody. A při té příležitosti samozřejmě ochutná trochu toho zlatavého národního moku, vždyť minipivovar tu máme doslova na každém rohu.

Consider it a warm-up for the Camino de Santiago I'm eager to undertake soon, or perhaps a trial to the Alpine hike my girlfriend and I planned for this summer. I took an early morning train from Prague to Černošice, one of the first villages beyond the city limits, to delve into the woods of the Berounka River valley. Why there? Because the woods are of broadleaf trees, a rarity in the Czech Republic, and they're particularly enchanting at this time of year (though typically, they'd be at their peak a month later – spring has graced us a few weeks earlier than usual).

S T. bychom si rádi prošli nějakou zajímavou trasu Camina de Santiago, a taky bychom letos chtěli vyrazit na nějakou alpskou túru, takže tohle byla taková rozcvička. Vlakem z Prahy do Černošic, jedné z prvních vesniček za městem, a pak nahoru do lesů nad Berounkou. Ty jsou totiž převážně listnaté, což není v našich zeměpisných šířkách tak úplně běžné. I proto by tu měl vzniknout ze stávající chráněné krajinné oblasti pátý český národní park.

While Pisa boasts its famous Leaning Tower, the village of Mokropsy has just made it to Hive with this not-yet-so-famous leaning bench in front of the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk. Would it swing if you took a seat?

In Dobřichovice, I descended from the woods to walk the final few kilometers along the river. Here's the Chateau of Dobřichovice, where, among other events, beer and food festivals occasionally take place. However, Dobřichovice wasn't my destination; I merely crossed the river there and picked up the cycling route that guided my last steps.

Další cesta už vedla po rovině podél řeky. Tohle je dobřichovický zámek, kde se mimo jiné konají také pivní a streetfood festivaly. Ale velké finále je ještě pár kilometrů proti proudu řeky, tentokrát už po cyklostezce.

While there’s no brewery in Dobřichovice (what a shame for the locals!), one is just beyond the village limits – here’s a sign luring the cyclists and other travelers to its welcoming embrace. PIVO, meaning beer, and PIVOvar, meaning brewery, for those who need translation. Perhaps next time, though, my destination is the brewery in Řevnice.

V Dobřichovicích sice pivovar není, což je pro místní jistě ostuda, ale hned v sousední vsi ano. Cílí i na žíznivé cyklisty a další sportovce. Tak snad někdy příště, tentokrát byl na paškále pivovar v sousedních Řevnicích.

And finally, behold – an old railway building transformed into a charming craft microbrewery, just the way we Czechs love. A sanctuary for bikers and hikers alike, it's the perfect spot to dine and rejuvenate after a day's journey. Established in 2018, the brewery swiftly earned the trust of locals – I encountered several of them carrying bottles of the local brew through the village. It's also renowned for its affinity to beer experiments. No wonder I felt obligated to document my experience here for #beersaturday.

A konečně! Tohle je cíl včerejšího putování. Bývalá drážní budova, ze které je dnes přesně takový řemeslný pivovárek, jaké mají Češi nejraději. Otevřel v roce 2018 a místní si jej rychle oblíbili. Jak to tak bývá, pivovary jsou obvykle nejlepší restaurace v okolí. A po cestě jsem potkal hned několik skupinek lidí, kteří si nesli lahvová piva, a nevypadali moc jako přespolní. Krom toho je Pivovar Řevnice známý i svou ochotou experimentovat, a tak není divu, že jsem si ho vybral pro další #beersaturday report.

The Beers

Fruity Trio; Oat Ale
Oat beers are quite rare, and this brew doesn't fit into any style, or at least I'm not aware of one. It's simply an ale brewed from oat malt. And it was worth those hours spent on the way (true, I could simply hop on a train and get off 200 meters away, but where's the fun in that?). Anyways, Fruity Trio lives up to its name, bursting with orange juiciness that later evolves into grapefruit tones. The mild bitterness blends perfectly with the fruity flavors, giving the beer an "American" vibe (thanks to the American hops playing a significant role). I couldn't imagine sipping this beer all night long; it would be overwhelming, but I'm glad I got to sample it.

Ovesná piva jsou celkem vzácnost. Tohle moc nezapadá do žádné škatulky, nebo alespoň nevím o stylu, ke kterému bych ho zařadil. Je to prostě svrchně kvašené pivo vařené z ovesného sladu. Takže Oat Ale. A za ty hodiny strávené na cestě rozhodně stálo (pravda, mohl jsem jednoduše dojet vlakem až na stanici 200 metrů od pivovaru, ale to by nebyla žádná zábava). Každopádně Fruity Trio dostojí svému názvu, překypuje pomerančovou šťavnatostí, která později přechází do grapefruitových tónů. Mírná hořkost se dokonale snoubí s ovocnými chutěmi a dodává pivu "americkou" chuť (to díky americkému chmelu, který ru hraje hlavní roli). Nedokážu si představit, že bych tohle pivo popíjel celou noc, ale takhle na košt je super.

This lager was not quite what I expected, and when I lost a word with the waiter when settling my bill, he confirmed what I suspected: the beer went… not wrong, but rather different direction to the intended one. Galaxy hops are not really detectable in the sip, the Czech hop variety dominates the field. I didn’t feel like sampling an IPL, but rather a very unusual Czech Lager. Which is not wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the strong hoppy tones with little maltiness and citric hint at the end, yet it was not what I thought I was ordering. On the other hand, it is not offered as an IPL, that was merely my wrong assumption.

Tenhle ležák nebyl tak úplně takový, jaký jsem očekával. Poptal jsem se na to vrchního, a ten mi dal za pravdu. Tahle várka dopadla trochu jinak, než měla. Ne špatně, to rozhodně ne, ale jinak. Chmel Galaxy není v doušku příliš patrné, v chmelových tónech dominují české odrůdy. Neměl jsem pocit, že bych ochutnal IPL, ale spíše velmi neobvyklý český ležák. Což není špatně, silné chmelové tóny s trochou sladové chuti a citronovým nádechem v závěru jsem si vyloženě užíval, přesto to nebylo to, co jsem si myslel, že si objednávám. Na druhou stranu se ale tohle pivo nenabízí jako IPL, to byla pouze moje chybná domněnka.

Strata Vulkan; Wheat Wine
And now for something truly special – beer wine. This wheat beer incorporates both beer and wine yeast, placing it somewhere between the two most popular alcoholic beverages. To nurture the more demanding wine yeast, the beer leans heavily on the malty side, resulting in a higher alcohol content – 18.2% VOL. However, I couldn't detect the alcohol there, perhaps due to a bit of sparkle. The predominant tones were sweet and malty, with a hint of orange. I don't have a strong opinion on this brew; it's too unconventional for that. But I can certainly imagine serving it instead of sparkling wine.

A teď něco opravdu výjimečného - pivní víno. Tohle pšeničné pivo obsahuje jak pivní, tak vinné kvasinky, čímž se chuťově řadí někam mezi dva nejoblíbenější alkoholické nápoje. Aby bylo možné nakrmit hladovější vinné kvasinky, jde o pivo hodně sladové, což má za následek vyšší stupňovitost i obsah alkoholu 18,2 %. Alkohol jsem v něm však nezaznamenal, není cítit jako u některých jiných silných piv. Snad je to tím, že je to tak trochu šumivé pivní víno. Převažovaly sladové tóny s nádechem pomeranče. Na tuto várku nemám žádný vyhraněný názor, na to je příliš netradiční. Ale určitě si dovedu představit Strata Vulkan jako přípitek namísto sektu.
