Friday beers #4: Wusu

I am not completely sure in what class Wusu beer falls. Flavourwise it is similar to a pale larger but with the bitterness somewhat toned down. The main beer ingredients are barley malt, rice, hops. The rice probably lightens the flavour. By itself I find it a bit bland but it goes perfect with salty snacks or something from the grill.

Only in last few years Wusu gained popularity. It definitely is well-behind Tsingtao. Alcohol content in Chinese "traditional" beer brands is on the low-side about 3%. Wusu is a bit higher with about 4%. Given that they only come in 600ml+ bottles and are much easier to drink then the other standard beers they get abused a lot in Chinese nightlife

The beer comes from Xinjiang but the brand was bought by the Carlsberg group. Xinjiang is in the Uyghur region of China which has a mostly muslim population. So why do they produce beer? It actually has nothing to do with the people. Wusu is only about 50 years old. And the Xinjiang desert climate is optimal for hops production: sunshine and temperature swings between day & night. As long as you can provide water to your plants your are good to go. (This is why in the US the Yakima valley is great for hops production.)

In conclusion, Wusu is an overall good beer but recommended to accompany with roasted meat （烤肉kaorou) :3
