Beer Tasting: Perlenbacher Hefeweissbier and Paulaner Weissbier

avatar

Hello, beer lovers! 🍻

Already on holiday?
Here, mulled wine is already flowing in streams, and Christmas music can be heard from all over. Christmas cheer is almost at its peak.

Well, I didn't mind. Today is 338 #beersaturday and I have two chilled beers waiting for me after my afternoon walk.

By the way, I've read that the big Christmas hit in Europe this year is mulled beer. Yeah, the Vikings drank it. We don't have it here yet, but wheat beer is recommended for mulling, apparently.
I have two German wheat beers in the fridge but I won't mull them, maybe another time.

First of all, the one with less alcohol.

🍻 😎 🍻

Perlenbacher Hefeweissbier

Brewed by Frankfurter Brauhaus, Frankfurt an der Oder, Brandenburg, Germany, for LIDL Europe.

Can, 0.5 l, alcohol 5.0% ABV, IBU 12.
Weissbier or Hefeweizen style beer is a pale German wheat beer with a distinctive banana and clove yeast aroma.

What do the Master Brewers say?

Our naturally cloudy wheat beer is not just sparkling. Hefeweizen is characterized as a fruity refreshment with a special, characterful taste with mild acidity and the aromas of banana and clove typical of a wheat beer. The Brandenburg brewery promises elegant tingling with a hint of hops on the finish. This makes enjoying this specialty beer a very special experience.

I'm curious about this beer because it's one of the cheapest in Lidl (€ 0.89).

The beer is cloudy light brown, the head is creamy and persistent. It has no particular odor. A sip goes down the throat smoothly. In the mouth I taste the sweetness of the malt, which lingers, and the discreet but very discreet hints of banana.
There is just a watery bitterness in the aftertaste.

I was not convinced by these. No harmony of tastes, nothing concrete and, in the end, watery. I expected more banana and clove flavor but apparently, that's it for the money.
One of the worst wheat beers I've tried so far, it'll certainly go quickly into oblivion.

🍻 😎 🍻

I don't have a beer meme today, just some sunset photos I took on a walk in the afternoon when it started to get dark. I don't think they're too bad.

🍻 😎 🍻

🍻 😎 🍻

And a homemade Christmas tree, we put it up yesterday, with two beers in the foreground at the moment :)

Let's move on!

🍻 😎 🍻

Paulaner Weissbier

Brewed by Paulaner Brewery, MΓΌnchen, Bavaria, Germany.
Can, 0.5 l, alcohol 5.5 ABV, IBU 16.
Weissbier or Hefeweizen, the same style as previous.

What do the Master Brewers say?

The No. 1 Weissbier in Germany and one of the world's favourites. Naturally cloudy and shining silky gold in the glass under a really strong head of foam. At the first mouthful, this Weissbier classic has a mild aroma of banana. Finer palates detect a trace of mango and pineapple and the balance between sweet and bitter. Beer connoisseurs appreciate the fine note of yeast and the mild but sparkling mix of aromas. It is a typical biergarten beer, which brings people together all over the world.

Well, the Paulaner Brewery, at least as far as I know, is best known for its wheat beers, and this is supposedly the best one.

The beer is cloudy golden in color, the head is solid, persistent, and creamy. It has no odor. It goes down the throat smoothly, the sweetness of the malt and immediately the bitterness of the hops, but less so. Aromas of banana, clove, also a little caramel.
A discreet hop of bitterness remains in the aftertaste which quickly disappears.

A tasty and juicy beer. Complex and has just the right balance of sweet and bitter flavors of ingredients. I'm not a big fan of these wheat beers, but this one is light years ahead of the previous one. The price in the local Spar store, €1.58, is also appropriate.
As it's locally available, occasionally (when I'm craving a wheat beer) a can or bottle will end up in my fridge.

🍻 😎 🍻

And what am I listening to as I write this and taste the beers?
Again, something from my #newtunes post yesterday, one, a very pleasing to me cover of Jefferson Airplane, let's just say it's festive, as befits the run-up to Christmas :)

From his explanation or review, I can clearly detect that the second one must be better than the former. What's your view?

I've only drank barley beer all my life. Light.
And then, right in Lidl, I found this wheat drink that you were drinking.
Tried it, and got hooked on wheat beers.
That's when my adventure with wheat beers will begin.
The Paulaner you showed was immediately on the menu and to this day remains a favorite for ordering in pubs. Sometimes I change and take Kapuziner, sometimes Erdinger, Hoegaarden or Bluemoon, Maister...
Since then I don't drink Lidl beer anymore πŸ˜€
I didn't know there was a community of beer loversπŸ™‚
I will join when I first visit my favorite pub next time with my choice of beer.

Am also thinking about it. Maybe, it's health challenge or she's allergic to beer ingredients

Wheat beer sounds strange to me because all I know is hops and malted barley beer. But, any day I have the opportunity to see wheat beer, I must buy it.

It tastes a little different because there is less barley and more wheat. They tend to be sweeter beers with banana and clove flavours, some with more of that flavour, some with less. I think the most famous wheat beer is Paulaner.
