On Sense of Entitlement: Earn Your Audience First

avatar

If we are to be truly honest here, most of us got into this blockchain because there's money in it. Who wouldn't bite when you were told that you can earn some money by simply creating content? Yes, there are still others out there that are more interested to learn and discover how far this blockchain can go. Monetary gain only comes second to them. Bless those outliers.

But for the rest of us struggling out there, we have to endure before our posts hit trending. Here's an inconvenient truth, "there is no money here". That is unless you actually give something in return to the community for the value that this blockchain will give you.

Everything that we need to know in order to be a success in this blockchain has already been written. Tutorials after tutorials have been posted and shared and it is clear that the execution of those lessons was the only thing one needs to do. And should keep doing as long as we're interacting with the people in the blockchain.

The truth is to get users to notice you, you need to make the first move of noticing others. The chances of another user browsing through your content is close to zero unless you show genuine interest in their content. The exception to this is being exceptionally good at what you do.

Reasons Why We Follow an Author

Based on my observation, people subscribe to a content creator for these common reasons.

  1. The content creator is skilled
This is the most obvious phenomenon everyone can see. Posts from authors that are skilled can easily make it to trending. Artists and singers that are exceptionally skilled at what they do enjoy the influx of followers and upvotes simply by sharing what they do.

  2. Entertainment
The second reason relies more on skill and relationship with their audience. You may not be the best at games or skilled at what you do but you still manage to keep people looking at you. If you have a good sense of humor or keep your audience glued to your writing, then you'll make it to trending.

This blockchain introduces another common reason that puts the social element to it. Another reason for following an author is the phenomenon of reciprocity.

In this phenomenon, you don't necessarily enjoy their content (or maybe you do, or just discovered you enjoy their niche) but what you appreciate more is their efforts of having a constant interaction with you and showing genuine interest in what you do. These are the people that populate your comment section whenever they could. You subsequently feel the need to pay back the attention and end up supporting them too.

No man is an island

There's a limit to how much you can accomplish by floating alone in the blockchain. If you choose not to engage with other people, it is perfectly fine. But then in doing so, you chose a fate where you just hope your content gets noticed by community curators. Genuine engagement is key. Comments that go beyond the "Nice post, thanks for sharing" remarks will get you further in the blockchain.

Although this does not apply to everyone. Some authors are just lucky to have wealthy backers that upvote their posts constantly. These authors are already secured with their earnings that interacting with other people no longer becomes a rewarding option.

In conclusion...

If you do not practice good Public Relations(PR), then your only option is to be entertaining or exceptionally skilled at what you do. You are likely to find success if you focus on being skilled because content like that is easy to curate. Being entertaining requires a certain level of PR skills and quality PR skills are tied to one's character.

Banking too much on your skills on the other hand is not a great idea either. As the blockchain users increases, the likelihood of encountering competitive content creators is high. This is where your relationships with other community members will matter a lot.

Highly skilled content creators equipped with stellar PR skills will more likely dominate the trending posts. They get to the trending page often because of their ability to create content while creating valuable relationships. That is the social aspect of this blockchain at work. Authors that bring value to the blockchain are authors that can uplift others. A sense of entitlement will simply get you nowhere. It is as simple as this: Earn your audience first. If you can't devote your time to be interested in someone else, don't be entitled to receive the attention that you haven't earned.

Lady!!! You put this together so well and have said what many others try to express to newcomers on a daily. I learned this lesson within the first two weeks of joining back in 2016.

No matter how awesome and amazing your posts are, building relationships and credibility is key here on this chain. My experience was so much more richer when I began building honest relationships. I am one of those people that have been blessed to have secured backing by selfless and supportive voters but yet I still seek and desire to have and gain personal relationships where support goes both ways.

Really great informative and honest post that needs to be seen. Reblogged! ✅

Thanks @crosheille! Had to learn this the hard way. I floated around for a long time before I found my way into communities. My shyness was also a hindrance. But of course, we all know we won't grow unless we go out there, step out of our comfort zones and just honestly connect with other authors.

Thanks for dropping by and thanks for the reblog. :)

That’s exactly right! Many great things could happen once we finally step out and just go for it!

It’s a pleasure ~ 😘

Ugh, the sense of entitlement. It knocks quietly, depending on the weather 😂 And it takes a while to shake off. It's the hardest for beginners who've had a small taste of rewards. But I accept that it's all part of the journey. Even tho it's challenging for an introvert, engagement is a must.

Thank you for the tips, @romeskie.

I feel you! I've been in the platform fornso long but I am stepping out of my comfort zones just recently. Lol. I have always known growth will only come if we step outside of our usual circle, but knowing something and applying it is challenging.

Sabay natin sabihing "Challenge accepted!" haha
