What are You Most Thankful For?

After all that has happened this year, there are surprisingly a lot of things I am feeling thankful for. This is an unofficial entry to @hiveph's contest: This year, what are you most thankful for?

“Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful.”
-Buddha

At the start of the year, a volcano erupted here in our country. We are miles away from the volcano itself but the ashfall reached our place. A lot of devastating news was seen on social media during those days. Families losing their properties, casualties reported, panic spreading throughout the country. It was all too much and at the start of the year at that. I am thankful during those times, we have enough for our family that we were able to donate and help out some of the people - especially the kids affected by the calamity.

" Enough is a feast."

A few weeks later, Covid19 happened. A lot of companies had to make some cuts. Including my husband's. I am thankful that he is still able to keep his job. Sure the pay had to be cut too, but at least we have enough to sustain our daily needs. Hearing news about people having to be laid off, I have nothing but a grateful heart that we still get to keep a steady source of income, no matter how little.

And I am thankful that my husband and I both acquired enough knowledge on how to effectively manage our finances. A lot of changes had to be done, a lot of sacrifices needed to be made, but still, we are able to cope up. I am thankful that we were able to teach our kid not to throw a tantrum when she doesn't get what she wants, otherwise, the lockdown would have been hell for all of us.

I am thankful for my daughters' endless questions and curiosity. It has made our homeschooling a lot easier. Her quest for knowledge and wisdom kept me on my toes and made me aware of how I react to all of her sudden inquiries. It has kept me humble and has also made me re-learn things (from science to pretty much everything else) from a different perspective.

Most of all, I am thankful for my family's health. My father has been bedridden since last year and I am thankful that he is still here with us. This means we are given more time to show our love and appreciation for everything he has given to us before. I am thankful that despite everything that happened - there have been 2 positive Covid19 cases within our neighborhood), our family still remained in good health. The positive cases (both are in perfect health condition now) even showed us who our real friends are. My younger brother who is currently overseas was exposed directly to someone who tested positive. I have been very anxious about him working abroad in the first place and that news had me worried for weeks. Thankfully, he is okay and is in perfect shape.

During these times of uncertainty, having good health, food friends, and a loving family is more than anyone could hope for. And I am very much thankful for that. Our family has a roof above our heads, food on the table, and clothes on our backs despite the lowered income. Yes, we did experience a lot of difficult situations this year, but we are still given another day to enjoy life, so that's something we have to be thankful for.

Glad to hear you, your family and friends are all in good health. You start you story with the volcano. I remember it. That was the day I was flying back to my home country. After a lot of canceled flights, I could finally go back to my husband. One month later, I returned to the Philippines. the original plan was for 3 months. But after more than 9 months I'm still here. I saw how life changed for everyone. As most expats have some kind of buffer, they can survive. But it's a complete different story for the local people. People are losing their income, trying to find ways to survive. I had so many plans for a local school that we were going to do this year. But we have to postpone it. I cannot do much, but helping a few people is so rewarding. Everyone is in this together, and the only way out is to support and help each other. Stay safe and take care of your beloved ones!
