Warhammer 40k - Unit Review Wheel 4 - Dark Angels, Belial

Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!

In this series, I will review one unit at a time, picking them randomly.

So let me spin the wheel and see what I get:

Dark Angels - Belial

Alright! The first Epic Hero for the Library! Master of the Deathwing, Belial!

The Grand Master of the Deathwing means that he is the 1st Company Captain of the Dark Angels Chapter. The Deathwing and the Ravenwing are the last two out of six "Wings" that still exist in the 41st millennium. In the 31st millennium there were six that formed the Hexagrammaton.

Stats-wise, Belial's profile is identical to that of any other Space Marine Captain in Terminator Armor.

A Move of 5", Toughness 5, A 2+ Save and 4+ Invul, and 6 Wounds.

Where he is special is his weapons and abilities.

His Storm Bolter is Master-Crafted and as such is Damage 2 with Precision! This means he can allocate hits and wounds made with this weapon directly to Characters in a unit and bypass the Bodyguards.

The Sword of Silence also has Precision and is otherwise a S6 Relic Blade!

And then we look at the abilities.

  • Grand Master of the Deathwing

This ability affects the unit that he leads. Any rolls to Hit that score a Critical Hit become Precision! So on a 6 to Hit, this happens. This is for both ranged and close combat attacks!

This means you could use a Terminator Heavy Weapon and snipe out Characters from the enemy units.

  • Strikes of Retribution

This is an amazing ability but only activates once Belial himself is targeted by attacks. When a melee attack is allocated to him, to a max of 6 attacks per unit that attacks him, he rolls a dice. On a 2+ the attacker suffers a Mortal Wound! This is a wound that you cannot roll an armor save or invul save for.

This rule also means that if two units are allocating attacks to him, he will use Retribution on both of those units!

Most impressive! I do not have a Belial and I definately should!

4+ Invulnerable Save? So he just has a 50% chance to shrug off any attack that hits? Yeesh. How many points is this guy?

Strikes of Retribution seems to make it impossible to even try to melee this character... 2+ is 80% chance... He could probably destroy an entire Ork army with just this one skill.

So a 2+ regular save, and then if you hit him with a weapon that reduces his save by 2 or more, then he uses the 4+ invul.

Nah, he is not invincible. Thr Strikes of Retribution does damage back but does not stop you from hitting him. So a 20man boyz unit with a Nob and a Warboss charging him could kill him because all of your Claw attacks plus Choppas. It's one unit so he can strike back a max of 6 times and kill 6 boyz.

If he hits back however, he could try go for the Boss himself. Who has his own 5+ invul. But with the amount of attacks a unit like that puts out... you can kill him on the charge.

Oh, I see. Thanks for explaining the nuance.
I read 'per unit' as being individuals or characters, I didn't think of a mob as a unit (actually that is funny that 'unit' can be used to describe a single thing or a single collection of things).

With Melee, would a mob of 19 boyz & nob all get to fight or is it just the models that can literally touch the base of the enemy?

I see that choppas get 3 attacks with AP -1, so I guess he'd be saving on 3+ but there would be a ton of attacks to deal with...

Haha. Yeah the definition of a unit is a character, a squad, a monster or a vehicle.

For close combat It is models in base to base contact plus models in base contact with THOSE models.

Indeed. Although UNDERSTANDING these rules as well as other rules enable elite armies with smaller units to also take advantage of the rules.

You can do screening, move-blocking and wall-blocking to really slow down an enemy advance.
