The Voicemail

It took exactly two months for me to summon up courage to ask Josephine out on a date, and it took her another three weeks of me asking and pleading with her to accept before she finally agreed to go out on that date with me.

As the day to the date drew closer, I made sure I had everything in place. I visited every site I could lay my hands on just to know the perfect things to say on a first date. She had picked a little restaurant not far from where we both lived, and it was perfect. I've had a crush on Josephine for as long as I could remember and I wasn't going to let anything spoil my date. We were going to have this date even if her favorite restaurant was located somewhere in the middle east.

The day for the date came. We had agreed to meet at the restaurant sometime around 6pm. It was 5:30 or there about so I decided to get dress, a perfect gentleman should be at the place before his lady arrives.

I just finished putting on my shoes when Michael, a good friend of mine walked into my apartment and told me Josephine called to cancel. I couldn't believe my ears. I quickly dialed her number the moment Michael left my apartment only to be sent to voicemail. I tried over and over again and by my fifth trial it was obvious I was very very upset, so upset that I decided to unleash it all on her voicemail. I called her names, things no lady would want to hear before hanging up the phone.

I laid back on my couch for good fifteen minutes thinking about how great I had thought today would be. Today was meant to be the best day of my life. I stood up and was about taking off my clothes when Micheal and the rest of our friends burst into my room, telling me I had just been pranked.

“Pranked?”

It was as if the whole world stood still and I thought about what I had just done, the voicemail. I knew saying or doing anything to the guys who be unnecessary and of no use due to the fact that I've done far worst than that to them, so I did the only thing I knew I could do, I ran.

I knew if Cupid was on my side and wanted whatever relationship he wanted me to have with Josephine to work out, then he must stop her from listening to that voicemail somehow.

By the time I got to Josephine place, I was out of breath. Her little brother opened the door and was shocked to see me.

“Josephine..Where's she?” I said gasping for breath.

“She just left for you guys date, ain't you suppose to be there by now.. Is anything wrong?” He asked but I was already on my feet, running to the restaurant.

The time was exactly 6:37pm when I got to the restaurant. I could clearly tell she was upset just by looking at her from afar, but what I couldn't tell was her reason of being upset.

“Was it because I was late, or did she listen to the voicemail already? Oh no.. God please”

Tired and covered in sweats, I walked up to her like a scared chicken. By the time I got to where she was seated, I noticed a change of expression on her face. The ones angry looking face was now looking worried.

“What happened? Is everything okay?”

I was kinda confused at the change of event but quickly caught up. “She was upset because of the voicemail, she most probably haven't listened to it yet. She was upset because I kept her waiting. Thank you Jesus”

I quickly came up with a story of almost getting robbed and that I had to run to save my self, thereby explaining why I was covered in sweat. I asked if I could make use of her phone to call the boys and tell them I was okay as mine ran out of battery and she agreed. I quickly checked her voicemail to delete mine only to meet the shock of my life, it wasn't there. In my anger, I must have forgotten to press the send button.

The realization that everything I did was for nothing almost made me scream out loud in frustration. I was still trying to compose myself when my phone started ringing.. One look at Josephine told me I will have to explain how my dead phone was suddenly ringing, this was going to be a long night..
