So what can make you defend yourself against a bigger and stronger opponent? No doubt that he has the advantage. Your training and experience can make a difference. You know how to use self defense technique and direct your force in a certain direction that the attacker cannot resist.

Welcome back to Self Defense Situation # 137. Every situation is different and you cannot fit one thing in every situation. What works in one situation, that might not work in another situation. When you fight for self defense, your move should be based on the situation.

If you fall on the ground and the attacker gets on top of you holding your both hands tight, it seems difficult to defend. You are on the ground, so cannot move here and there. The attacker is on top of you, moreover, he grabs your hands.

You can watch this video where it shows the situation. We will talk about it in detail. All video credit goes to Shahabuddin karate.

In case you fall down in a fight, get up as soon as you can. You would limit your movement when you are on the ground. If you are a woman and the attacker is a guy, you can understand that things can get worse.

To make your move, first of all, bend legs in case it spreads on the ground. Now if you want to lift your hands up with a view to releasing your hands from the attacker, it might not work because it is working directly against the attacker's force.

Instead, what you can do is, move your hands to the side. The attacker will get lower because of this. At the same, push your hips up. Now you can release your hands, you can grab his neck and roll over quickly. You can attack the attacker and get out of there fast.

You need to spend some time practicing this. When you get used to it, you can apply this self defense technique without thinking about it. And that's what you need when your life is in danger. You are not going to remember all these things. You have to be fast to make your move.

Love these posts.

Wanted to add that much of what you are sharing here would be (in the US) found in martial arts ending in jitsu. The Do endings typically revolve around sport martial arts which are not for the most part practical in self defense on the streets. Many of the styles being taught in the US are geared towards sport and the selling of belt levels, usually requiring contracts to be signed as well for extended periods of time.

There are hard and soft martial arts, and after practicing both years ago, I wish I had focused entirely on the softer forms of jitsu and not the harder style Do that I began with. My last instructor (soft style AikiJitsu) many years ago, used to say that once you were comfortable in moving your body, you could effectively fight from any position, even upside down. Hence so much focus at the beginning on learning to roll, how to fall etc. I was amazed that within a few months I was mastering falling, flipping and a powerful kick in the same fluid motion. The impediment was fear, as its not natural to do such things until we practice them. Before I took what is considered a softer style, I was arrogant in my belief it was all power and speed coupled with proper technique. While those things are all powerful, learning to use energy flow to ones advantage instead of brute power to overcome was eye opening, as well as humbling. Opponents I never had a shot against due to their advantages in the brute techniques were suddenly beatable using softer styles designed to harness that very brute force.

I would also urge anyone reading this post to learn as much about pressure points. They might be necessary to force your attackers energy away from you if they do trap you to the ground. They are numerous and easy to attack due to this. Muscle separations are an excellent example of this.

If something is soft, you cannot hurt that easily even with a powerful blow. As a beginner, we start learning from the basics, when we go to the advanced level, it would be easier to understand and practice that. For example, fingers are not harder than the fist. But you can make much more damage with your fingers.

If someone learns martial arts to get recognition and be a champion, their focus usually on sports. But if you want to learn how to defend yourself, you are on the wrong track. You should focus on martial arts that is applicable in real life for self defense.

Thank you so much @practicalthought for taking the time to read my post and giving your feedback!
