A Picture Speaks a Thousand Words]- Birthday cake

The cashews stared at her. The crust looked a little too brown but it didn't matter to her. She wanted that cake badly. She knew it would be pricey as it had nuts and all. The cake was freshly baked by the lady of the house who also sold her homemade foods besides cakes and bread.

The birthday celebrations were the next day and she did not want to skip buying a cake even though it meant another expense. She wanted her child to be happy. His smile meant more to her than anything. She would not mind working extra for him.

She asked the lady about the price and was told that it cost only Rs.80/-. Looking surprised, she asked why it was low priced. She wanted the best for her child and also she did not want any sympathy either. She knew that the lady herself worked hard to raise her three daughters who were studying in college.

The lady smiled and replied that it was festival time and she had decided to sell all her goods for less profit so that everyone could enjoy without any worries because that was the message behind every festival irrespective of religion.

She smiled and gladly paid the price and took home the cake. Her son was delighted and together they both enjoyed eating the lemon cake. It did not have any fancy icing or decorations but each bite was filled with love.

She cut small pieces and told her boy to distribute the cake to neighbors who were not so well off. Her boy had to learn some life lessons too, she decided. He took each piece and kept it in a small box along with chocolate that he had been given by his friend whose father had come from Dubai. He could have kept the chocolates for himself but he felt that the children near his house might never get to eat such fancy chocolates.

Needless to say, the children were very happy and so were their parents. They cheered for him and wished him well.

The next day, his teacher had a surprise gift for him as a birthday present. A shiny new bicycle. He was overjoyed and all smiles. He could now work as a paperboy and help his mother. Life was looking good.
