Into Thin Air - 6 - Oksana

The driveway is partly damp due to untimely rain when he parked his car in front of the house. It wasn't just those incidents that forced him to get away from the house, he needed some time away from here to think, to make decisions. Now, it was time to face the problem at hand, although he was far away from any concrete plans. He's sure doesn't want to go with the flow and end up in the hospital or worse morgue.

He's hesitating to walk up the stairs. Unsure if he should go in, he's rooted to his spot playing mindlessly with the set of keys wrapped in his fingers. His eyes lazily zooming from the doorway to the roof. Either he can go inside the house or he can walk away and never look back like all the other previous occupants. Something tells him to take the step forward but he still remembers the pair of dead eyes. He hasn't told Manson yet that he's going back to the house which he knows that his friend will disagree fervently. He's a good friend who's looking out for him and they both are trying to get to the bottom of this whole shebang.

He takes a deep breath. What's the worse that can happen! Weighing all the options, he strides inside. He's already in front of it, might as well brave what comes afterward. He pushes the door open that leads him to the hallway, eyeing the stairway that leads to his chamber. So far, nothing occurred upstairs which made him feel safe to some extent. Uncertainty looms over him to remind him of the frailty of this sense of security, just because nothing happened upstairs doesn't mean it won't. Now, that he is inside the house, his conscience screaming at him to run from the wretched place. But this is his home. Home.

He is overwhelmed with silence, only the faint sound of the clock ticking downstairs remains. Tick tock tick tock. His heart is beating parallel with the sound; alert and ready although for what he couldn't tell.

Tick tock. Tick tock

"Good afternoon." He jumped from his position. Oksana is sitting on the table beside the window, dangling her feet. That same familiar smile on her face.

"Oh, hello there. I was wondering when you'd show up. How have you been? You got pretty scared last time." He said.

"Last time? When? I'm not sure what you're talking about." She squinted her eyes for a moment. His eyes trying to decipher her expressions, she remembers nothing about that night.

"Nevermind I guess. You look well?!" That came out as a question more than a sentence.

She looks at him as if he had grown two heads in a matter of seconds.

"So, Oksana. Would you tell me more about yourself?" He says.

"How do you know my name?" She asked.

"You told me the other day. So, tell me more about yourself." He states.

"What do you want to know?" She chimes almost excitedly, looking out the window. Suddenly the phonograph started to play but a different piece this time. "I hope you don't mind about the music."

"Tell me about your family, your friends maybe your life." He's curious to know but tried to appear nonchalant. Thankfully she's unaware of it. He intends to know more of her story before any interruption.

"You already know my name. I live... lived with my father and brother, Nikolai. We lost my mother when we were coming over here from Kazan. I do have to ask you something. How can You see me when no one else can?" She doesn't mask her curiosity.

"I have no idea of what you're talking about!" He says.

"Before you, only Amber could see me. She's such a beautiful baby. It saddened me to watch her leave." She says

"Amber?" He questions.

"Oh you wouldn't know her. She stayed with her parents here before you." She sounds a little affected.

"Do you know why they left? I don't know what is happening and I'm positive that you know what is happening." He's accusing her.

Her brows furrowed and gripped the window sill tightly. She looks out the window, deeply troubled by what he said. The volume of the music rising gradually.

"You won't understand. No one understands. And why would you! He never lets out his dark side in front of you. You'll only accuse me if something terrible happens, wouldn't you, Alfred?" She snaps.

He looks somewhat at a loss. "I'm not Alfred. I'm Patrick." In an attempt to defuse the situation, he tries to calm her down. "I apologize if I have upset you."

She looks at him again, half smilingly. "It's..." Both of their heads snap in the direction of the sound that's echoing in the walls.

That haunting sound...
