The Hesitant

The irradiated moon outshone and blanketed every star in the sky.

A majestic view it was. It wasn't a pull that she felt nor she was drawn to the moon. It's just a moonlit night she felt tranquil, free, nonchalant. She was only allowed to roam freely around the island on a full moon night, but she sneaks out during the new moon as well. She thought she was already breaking rules by swimming towards another island, breaking two or three more rules wouldn't increase her punishment ten folds. But never she thought she'd meet him, Richard. She found him intriguing and endearing. It wasn't her first human interaction; the few other times she had met the human population, she was repulsed by them, especially by the males. Richard was different somehow and she wasn't sure why. She was hoping to find out at their next meeting.

Another full moon brought another chance for their meeting.

Although, Nahnna never thought of meeting or interacting with humans socially. They live far away from any human to ever find their existence and as time went by, they became a myth. The sirens have been secluded from human civilization for centuries and have been living on this island. They have avoided all prying eyes and lived off of what they grew on that island. No siren has ever stepped foot anywhere near a human for a long time. That rule isn't just for her but for every one of her kind. For her, the rules were somewhat careless. She wasn't as powerful as her other sister sirens nor the queen; her powers were weaker and she was more human whereas her sisters were ethereal. No one paid much attention to her and so sneaking off to another island was never suspected by anybody, one of the reasons why she could come and go undetected.

She often swam close to the shore finding Richard pacing restlessly there but she didn't attempt to contact him. She was afraid that her animalistic form would disgust him, or worse might compel him to harm her. While in other days when she couldn't hide her true form, she could only appear humanlike during a full moon or crescent moon where she could appear less unearthly than other times, even though being in her mortal form makes her more vulnerable. She was in dilemma although Richard appeared to be harmless, she didn't want to take the chance. She had no idea what would happen in their third meeting and was clueless about where they were heading to. That's what she thought about all day and all night.

If she had used any powers then that would explain the connection they feel, but he appeared unexpectedly. Nahnna knew that he was smitten but unsure if it was due to her appearance or if he too felt a connection. At first, she thought of wielding her powers but she was too weak to use any; the moon had rebuffed her and made her more mortal. Little did she know that she didn't have to use any of her magic because Richard was already enamored by her and not just her appearance but everything that she was about. Wishing she could figure out what this connection was about but she had no chance of confirming it without risking her secret and risky endeavors to off charted shores.

Riddled with troubling thoughts and consequences, she decided that their next meeting would be their last. She was rebellious and did what she pleased but wise enough to contemplate the repercussions both worlds would have to face, especially hers. At least, Richard didn't have to worry about the consequences just as she did.

What would the world be like if the sirens weren't chastised and banished? Could the mortals and inhuman beings live peacefully?

So many questions but there was no one to answer her. She could feel her pulse rising but taking a look at the moon, she jumped to the cold waters of the sea to swim towards where he was waiting for her. As she got closer, she saw him in his usual restless form pacing back and forth on top of the rock where they met. That made her smile but soon her negativity engulfed her and she dived down again.

The siren was unsure about her actions. 1 2 3
