On The Hunt for Letter "S"....

avatar

Yesterday my wife and myself were back at the supermarket doing our fruit and veggie shopping but also on the hunt for the @alphabethunt contest run by @barbara-orenya and this week begins the hunt for letter "S" so follow us down the aisles and see what we can find starting with the letter "S" honestly this reminds me of the little games we use to play as kids , i spy with my little eye i am sure we have all played this game at some stage of our childhood life anyway lets move on.

Let's start of with these little baby yellow squash one little cute squash used in many recipes in roast dinners with carrots and potatoes , garlic roasted baby squash with herbs and even babies love mashed up squash soup. This little yellow baby squash is seriously a nutritional power packed veggie and is has a great mineral that helps to boost your bone strength.

The Sapo Melon originating in Spain also known as the Santa Claus melon is different on the outside and the inside to a Rockmelon it looks old and wriggle with a green , yellow look on the outside and creamy yellow flesh on the inside and is much sweeter then a Rockmelon. Also rich in vitamins and very rich in potassium which is good for your heart.

Strawberries we are all familiar with and love either eaten fresh used in smoothies , put on cakes as a dressing or made into strawberry jam and many more uses.

Did you know that there are also white strawberries which are even more sweet and juicer then the red strawberries and much bigger in size they are grown in Japan and Japan also grows some pretty big red strawberries but you pay a pretty hefty price for these huge strawberries.

Even the Korean grow some pretty big strawberries.

Star fruit is grown mainly in the tropics of Southeast Asia it's a sweet and sour fruit but more on the sweet side if let ripen fully it has a lovely pineapple-passionfuit taste i love this fruit it gets it's name from the of this shape been when cut up it has the shape of a five point star. This star fruit is full of nutrients , fiber and vitamin C

The Salak fruit is a species of palm tree native to Java and Sumatra in Indonesia also known as the snake fruit and you can see why by it's tough skin yet this fruit has the taste to die for when in season even though a expensive fruit in Australia , i do buy a few because i just can't resist the taste of this fruit it has the flavor of a cashew nut sweetened with plum and peach and it's great benefits are it's powerful in antioxidant and works well to prevent cardiovascular disease, strokes and even cancer.

The Santol fruit is a fleshy fruit with a sour to a very sweet taste depending on maturity and variety the flavor of this fruit is like a mild peach and apple flavor. They are widely cultivated throughout tropics of Southeast Asia and actually come in two colors a red and a yellow but i have only ever seen the yellow one.

Yesterday my wife and myself were back at the supermarket doing our fruit and veggie shopping but also on the hunt for the @alphabethunt contest run by @barbara-orenya

Usually, when you are posting to several challenges, you might want to mention them all. I realize it is your intention, but, it makes it harder for people to find.

Your S words are delicious! There is no other way to describe it! The Sapo melon is one is as sweet as can be and honestly, I have never tried a white strawberry! I just need to, especially if they are sweeter and juicier, but, honestly, they look so wrong! Don't you think, or is that just me?

Star Fruit is yummy, but, the Salak? I never heard of that! You have brought me a generous supply of different fruit this time. I keep looking at the Santol fruit and it screams fig to me! Out of curiosity, how big are they? I enjoyed your post very much! There have been some really interesting ways that #MarketFriday has been presented, all of which adds all the more charm to the mixing bowl. The challenge points out our differences, but, then, it also shows many things our cultures share. When the day is done, it shows off how human we all are and how we basically all care about our families and others. I love the experience of it all. I appreciate the love and support given to #MarketFriday! Thank you! Truly! Your participation adds a piece of your world, and I have to say, people are interested in is seeing it. This entire challenge has opened up the world to me and so many others. Thank you again for being a part of all this! I hope you have a fabulous day! Hive on!!

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

How to Participate:
Go to the market! Any market will do! Food, clothing, plant, or animal, if you wish. You can go to the zoo, an art auction, and restaurants. Anywhere or anything that you pay money for any kind of service.
Take pictures! Be creative! It’s fun!
Tell us a little bit about the market, what brought you here?
Post the picture.(s)
Don’t forget to use the MarketFriday Community #196308 to post from or hashtag it! #MarketFriday by @dswigle If you hashtag it, drop the link to your post here so I can easily find them.

As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!

Thanks for pointing that out @dswigle i will do that in the future 🙂

Thank you so much @dswigle for your lovely comment i am so happy you enjoyed this post i always try and look for unusual fruits and veggies it is easier to put up the every day common fruits and veggies but if i can make it more interesting like the Salak and the Santol fruit and as you say the Santol fruit does look like a huge fig now that you mention that it is about the size of two apples if you can imagine that and some bigger.

You know i had the same thought about them white strawberries i said the same to my wife they are not ripe this is what made us buy some we needed to know what they tasted like and to our surprise they were the sweeties strawberries ever tasted i don't know what the Japaneses injected in them but it was certainly the right combination even though it looked wrong.

Have a lovely day @dswigle 🙂

Thank you @lizelle i always try and find the most uncommon heard of fruits and veggies it does make it more interesting and they shouldn't be left out let's make them popular also..yeah 😁

White strawberries are not that common they are more for the people in Japan that will pay ridiculous prices for them not for us normal people but i did try them just for curiosity and they are amazingly sweet were at first i thought they looked unripe and wouldn't be sweet 🙂

Wow! You have a variety of fruit that I've never heard of! I've never heard of Salak fruit, but we do have Santol here. I was amazed to know that we have the same name of that fruit. But I googled it and it is Cotton Fruit in English. I didn't know that there's a white strawberries. They looked unripe though. Hahaha! 😂

Thank you @gingbabida you are right Google said it is known also as cotton fruit but all around Asia it is known as the Santol fruit so i when with the original name and i wish we had it in season all year round here in Australia i love this fruit.

My wife and i thought the same they looked unripe till we tried them they were amazingly sweet and huge i don't know how the Japanese are growing them so big 😁

Oh yes! But santol is just a seasonal fruit, that bears during summer here in the Philippines (Mar-May).

Hahaha! 😂 Maybe that strawberries were genetically enhanced. Hmmmm.. 🧐

Same here in Australia it's only seen at seasonal times. Yep them strawberries i would say have had a few steroid injections but they were amazingly sweet overdosed with sugar also 😂

Looks pretty yummy! There is one particularly unique fruit around here in South East Asia that isn't seen elsewhere. It's called the Rambutan, and although it doesn't start with S, it's scientific family name is Sapindaceae. Honestly, as sweet as it is, it just looks and feel like hairy balls 😆...

I love these Rambutan they taste very similar to a Lychee we do have them in Australia maybe imported from Thailand or Indonesia i have eaten many of them 😁

avatar

Ah, I forgot that you can get loads of tropical fruits there Down Under 😅. They do indeed taste like lychee, but with a bit more texture. The one problem of Rambutans, is that freshly picked ones are a nest for ants. They like to hide amidst the "hairs", and picking up said Rambutan is inviting an army of ants to crawl over and bite you.

Indeed we have a great mixture of fruits in our country with all the multinationalities here everyone whats there kind of fruit.

Ants go well with Rambutans a bit of raw meat is good protein 😂

Ewww... NO! I have seen a serving of fried cockroaches before, since Malaysia does have quite a large Chinese community. It's a rarity, and I like it that way. I hate cockroaches enough when they're alive, and even more so when they're dead and dripped in oil! 😖

Ewwww...forget the cockroaches but i have tried small fried frogs and ants they are yummy with some chili and fried onions good protein 😂

Hello. I have never noticed a white strawberry at a market. Maybe I've overlooked them. You have a nice list of market items for the "S" alphabet letter. Thanks for sharing.

When you state about the Salak fruit that "it's great benefits are it's powerful in antioxidant and works well to prevent cardiovascular disease, strokes and even cancer," what is the source of your information you got this from? What evidence and statistics are there to support your statement that it works well to prevent cancer?

Thank you @justclickindiva these white strawberries are imported from Japan i don't think every market would import them been a expensive strawberry to sell i don't think they would been seen everywhere.

About the Salak benefits you would have to ask this question to medical researches from world health organizations they are the ones that did the study on this fruit.
