On The Hunt for Letter "W"....

avatar

Yesterday my wife and myself were back at the supermarket doing our fruit and veggie shopping but also on the hunt for the #alphabethunt contest run by @barbara-orenya and also submitting this post for #marketfriday hosted by @dswigle and this week begins the hunt for letter "W" so follow us down the aisles and see what we can find starting with the letter "W" honestly this reminds me of the little games we use to play as kids , i spy with my little eye i am sure we have all played this game at some stage of our childhood life anyway lets move on.

These are the rules that @barbara-orenya proposed as to completing the last few letters of the @alphabethunt ......

  1. This week we're chasing words starting with the letter W, and as we now almost reach the end of the alphabet, I can confirm that next week it will be a XYZ hunt 😉

  2. So we group these last three letters and you can come up with 6 words starting with X Y and/or Z, while trying to find words in each, as far as possible 😊 ...do not only propose Y, try to propose in X and Z too ...😉

  3. But for now we will perform the W-hunt and this is a letter with endless possibilities so I hope you'll have fun !😉

So for this week with the letter "W" i am going to start you of with a vegetable called Witlof which is related to the lettuce family the Witlof you can say has a slightly bitter and nutty flavor but when mixed in a salad with apple and walnuts it becomes a really interesting and different taste. Witlof in general has a fresh, crunchy, slightly bitter taste if you like eating it raw. Health benefits well packed with a good source of vitamin C, folic acid and dietary fiber.

Watercress is perennial plant with small heart shaped leaves. It has a peppery flavor that's sharp but not bitter it's associated with the cabbage family i would have thought associated more with the lettuce family as it goes great tossed into salads. Watercress is known as a superfood been packed with rich vitamin's like A , C and E and also a great source of folate, calcium and iron.

Watermelon well we all love watermelon a nice refreshing fruit for the summer seasons to quench that thirst and summer dry throat. We all know the health benefits of eating watermelon and it can be had fresh or as a juice and great mixed with fruit salads. Watermelon also known as a superfood and did you know there are over 1,000 varieties of watermelons 😱

White Radish also known as Daikon Radish it looks like a white carrot can be cooked in soups and stir fries and also can be used in salads and also good for pickling , it has a sweet, crisp and mild taste very popular with Asian cuisines.

Walnuts who doesn't love walnuts they are a round single seeded stone fruit that grows from the walnut tree , they grow in a hard shell when the shell is cracked open the walnut fruit is revealed. These yummy walnuts have been proven to have many great health benefits as with the heart , mood-boosting because it contains omega-3 fatty acids which keeps the brain happy and they say it supports weight loss and many more health benefits , just a healthy little nut all round 😊

Wombok is a vegetable , in much of the world this vegetable is referred to as "Chinese cabbage" but in Australia and the Philippines it's referred to as "Wombok". Yet in New Zealand it is known as the Wong Bok or Won Bok in any case the Wombok goes great with coleslaw or shredded on a sandwich or hamburgers also is used as key ingredient in dumplings and rolls you can also add it to steamed dishes, and soups but myself i love eating raw with some Thai spicy dishes it cools down the burn feeling of the spices.

Never heard of witlof but I would love to try it. And the watercress is so nice on sandwiches. I used to have a pot with watercress once on the balcony. I should grow it again. I am big fan of salads and I love to mix different veggies with nuts and seeds and the best is with wallnuts. We are blessed to have wallnut trees everywhere, there are two in front of our block of flats.

I remember when I was a boy there was a little brook flowing through my parents garden where Watercress grew. Fresh Watercress on a bread with butter was a simple food but delicious 😊

By the way, instead of Watercress we have put thin slices of White Radish from the garden on the bread ... delicious too 😋

Of course there is also a Walnut tree in the garden 😉

You are right, we call the Wombok Chinese Cabbage.

Well, I think hunting this letter was much to easy for you - there are no drawings 😂 lol

Well done, my friend, these are nice W words 😃

And now let's hunt XYZ 😉

Yeah, but you should try it with bread like our so called "Schwarzbrot" (black bread), but I have no idea what kinds of bread you have down under, maybe even something similar 😉

I believe that's what many of us thought at first, at least I did and I would also have had a few more 😁

The X is the hardest, but 2 will be manageable I think.

I have never heard of witlof, but, now you have me wondering if I can get some here. The watercress is a given and I love it on little cucumber sandwiches, with a little butter - and then again, I love it tossed on a salad.

I have 17 black walnut trees at my house on the shore and they are hard to crack, but they are free! So I won't complain. I had no idea there are that many watermelons!!! No kidding! Wow!

Chinese Cabbage! That is what I call the last one!!! You have really shined on this contest!!! That is so awesome! And creative too! Thank you so much for taking part in #MarketFriday. I will be taking a small break from running the challenge and will be back in November. In the meantime, feel free to collect some pictures of the markets or other places. I am not going anywhere, posting as usual, and will be back, but, for the challenge to be done right, it takes a fair amount of time.

The entire challenge has migrated from a stroll through a market to a cultural extravaganza. ! It really surprised me, but, also delights me to know how much effort people put into it. It pointed out our differences in the beginning, but, then, it really started showing how many things our cultures share. When the day is done, it shows off how human we all are and how we basically all care about our families and others. I love the experience of it all. I appreciate the love and support given to #MarketFriday! Thank you! Truly! Your participation adds a piece of your world, and I have to say, people are interested in is seeing it. This entire challenge has opened up the world to me and so many others. Thank you again for being a part of all this!I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:
