my journey to the Alphabet Land (day T)

Troubles with T

My next post for the #AlphabetHunt challenge by @barbara-orenya. This time we had to find words starting with letter 'T'. Pretty easy task, you will say? I lended the word 'Trouble' from @johannpiber's post (thank you, Johan!) -- cause it totally reflects my collision, I had too much brilliant entries to choose from, and it was a trouble, eventually it Turned into a no-go for me.

Then, I decided to make my life more complicated and to add extra restrictions -- to find the letter T exclusively on my bookshelves. A crushing success awaited me!

Also, I found out there exist a brand new community dedicated to books and reading: 'Hive Book Club'. I will make a cross-post there, and I hope, this blog will raise awareness about the said community and will be usefull... (well, unless the hiveans abandoned reading books at all, haha).

So... here we go.

T — Tolkien

First things first, right? JRRT was the 1st T I thought of.

tolkien_4737.jpg

tolkien_4733.jpg

Since my own and my wife's libraries merged, we have many different editions of same Tolkien novels. And after the birth of the child, we bought several more new ones! Most of all versions we have "The Hobbit".

T — 'Treasure Island'

t-land.jpg

If you can read, most probably you have been read this book once, or twice. Its a classic adventure, pirate and youth novel! 'Treasure island' by R.L.Stivenson. We've obtained this splendid fancy illustrated Russian edition of the novel for our baby and she became a fan almost instantly. And I totally cant remember what time it was for me, reading it - number 5, or maybe number 10?

T — Taschen

ttachen1.jpg

If you are not totally alien to art books, you probably know this name. 'Taschen' is a venerable German publishing house that is creating excellent art books since the days of Albrecht Dürer! No, just kidding: since 1980-es only. (Surprisingly, today its still run by the descendants of Benedict Tashen, who founded it.) Each library's structure over time become organized and takes its own unique shapes and certain direction; as a child I was buying a lot of sci-fi and later I was into history books, and after graduating from university I focused mostly on professional, reference and art books. 'Tashen' publishes two types of albums: solid compendiums, fully generalizing certain artist's heritage, and a light, "pop" versions of same books in paperbacks. Alas! even these lighter, cheaper versions were so expensive for me, that I always could afford to obtain much less than I wanted. I had to choose, and in the end, there are seven Tachen albums on my shelf today (there were eight, but I gave one to my friend). This is what I chose to get: Alphonse Mucha, Edvard Munch, Paul Klee, Amedeo Modigliani, Wassily Kandinsky, Dadaism, Antoni Gaudi, Maurits Escher. (I also have a great book on Pablo Picasso in different, then Tachen, edition).

I have got both the Russian and English editions; what can I say? although Russian one is hard-bound, and original is a paperback, the original one I love far more - it is printed on a better, yellowish, thicker paper and is much more fancy.

T — 'The Twelve Chairs'

thunt12a.jpg

'The Twelve Chairs' (in Russian: 'Двенадцать стульев') is a classic satirical novel by Soviet authors Ilf and Petrov (1928). Its plot follows characters attempting to obtain diamond jewelry hidden in a chair. Its main character Ostap Bender is a brilliant example of intelligent swindler and trikster. The novel has been adapted to films (very successfull and popular). What makes this novel especially remarkable is -- its a whole encyclopedia of life in post-revolutionary Russia of 1920s, a satirical depiction of devastation in people's minds, the decline of culture and everyday life. This is a masterpiece of world literature! PS. The heroes suffered a fiasco and did not find the hidden diamonds in the end, so no happy ending! PPS. I am lucky to posess a special, upgraded edition, which has all the fragments deleted by the Soviet censorship restored. The novel became thicker by 30%!

T — 'Typography'

typo.jpg

English artist Eric Gill (1882-1940) is an iconic figure of the 20th century. An incredibly laborious and fruitful man, he left us a huge legacy: stone-carving, prints, illustrated bibliophile books, fonts, journalism ... Gill was a socialist and religious thinker, an implacable fighter against the vulgarity of industrialism in design. This iconic book, published in his own printing house Hague & Gill in 1931, focuses on typography during the era of industrialism. No, I will not recommend this book to everybody -- it is for those who dig as deeply as Gill. The Russian edition of 2018 was published using a crowdfunding scheme, and I am proud that I have participated in its publication as an investor.

All the images taken by me, as always. I considered this round other words that came to my mind, which finally lost their position to more successful rivals:

tank / trolley / tele / tandoor_oven / ticket / top / tower / twins / transient / tomb / toad / tram / tobacco / teaser

Those are all good things... but nobody can fit an unfittable, right? Probably I will create an extra post with T-leftovers... I havent decided yet. There was so much good stuff prepared for this week!

Now I think its a right time to create an index to my posts for this great challenge.

Treasure Island - "Schatzinsel" in German, of course I have read this book when I was a boy. The book is still in the attic of my parent's house.

I love the stories of Tolkien, but I prefer to watch movies, because when I read a book I fall almost suddenly asleep when I read the first few lines. A movie might keep me awake till the end most times 😂

I knew that your post would be something special again, my friend, but this time you have made it even harder for yourself ... great 😁

It seems this #AlphabetHunt is much to easy for you - let's see what you come up with when we hunt the X and the Z, but I already know you will smile even then 😉

eheheh.... bingo! probably I will go searching for any X / Z names in the street displays...

I cant say I share your attitude to Tolkin's books, but I totally can understand this bias about his texts being sleepy and hard-to-penetrate... correct. but the films... khmmm... let me keep silence, Mr Policeman, as I am in the know, all i will say will be used against me in the court :P

Cheers and !BEER 's, my friend!

I've had the idea to search for street or village names, but even these would be hard I believe 😉

I know, movies are not the same as the books, although I remember movies which seemed to me better than the books, but that's only my opinion 😁

Cheers and !BEER

Oh yes, !BEER has improved my creativity, that's very true, but when I was sober I suddenly didn't like most of the ideas I had anymore ... cheers 🤣

Very original catch @qwerry 🤗
Tolkien is my favorite, I enjoy reading his books ... I also like movies, but more books ...
R. L. Stevenson and the Wonderful Adventure 😊

I used to read a lot more than now, and everything that attracted me .... Most of all, SF and Asimov is my favorite ....
Now I can barely read and I miss that ...
Thank you for reminding me that the books are here 🥰

SF was my love of childhood! but we grow up, we cant feed ourselves all the time with same shhit :P
i still love to re-read a lot of old books I loved back in the time I was young. I do not have Asimov's books at my hands, and it wasnt my fave, tho. I admire a lot (and would re-read at some point) his Foundation thrilogy. During the summer I took at library and read Sheckley's novel and a few stories (I try my 11 y.o. girl to get acquainted with SHeckley brilliant short stories). Right now we read stories about Tuf's adventures by J.R.R.Martin (have you read it? exceptional cycle of stories I highly recommend it to you! his hero, Tuf, was very fond of / obsessed with, cats and mushrooms - haha! - absolutely same as me!)

Thank you for reminding me that the books are here 🥰

hehe. my pleasure. btw, the Hive Book CLub community founder hinted me there will be a weekly book challenge, will start since October. go suscribe to that group, if you'd like not to miss that.

all the best!

Yes, you're right, we can't read the same shit ... Now I just see what I read 🤭
I would just read some again. I have Asim's trilogy and I could read it again. I also really liked Ender's play and Orson Scott Card's Speaker for the Dead..
I haven't read Sheckley's novel either.....
I haven't read it but I will try to find and read it ... What you described seems interesting to me 🤗
Yes, I will join the club and follow ... I believe I will find interesting things
I wish you a nice evening 🌌

Sheckley has a lot of stories, i cant name all of them - some are VERY nice - outstanding, others not at all.

I love Orson Card Ender cycle a lot!

my other very fave author, in years, was Robert Heinlein
I can name a few novels if this name is unknown for you
at least one - 'Moon is a Harsh Mistress'

I wish I had more time for what really interests me 🙄

BTW I love mushrooms and cats 😁 currently only surrounded by cats, kittens, about ten and three of mine 😅

I haven't read Robert Heinlein either ..... I missed everything

I will have to read them .....

Thank you🤗

Have a nice evening 🌌

no, thank yo,u, we have one old lady and all our territory belongs to her, she will tolerate no rivals, very nervous :P thats the reason we still not have second cat, as our baby asked a lot of times (she wanted her own cat... typical infants claim... and she didnt promise to care of it, actually). heh.

Of course in the package and by plane 🤭
Understandably, they love comfort and being alone.
But now my yard is full of cats 🤣🤣🤣
That's how it is with children, they want everything and parents will take care of 🤭

And I've been whining about it for years as I would like to have it, and now it's not planned to come true.🤭

o-o! so, you wanted it for years, and now dreams came true? splendid!
I actually live in a small city flat (room) which lacks free space for anything, even for things :( it is overcrowded with things. and in my strong opinion, the critical number is three. three cats is maximum one can afford to keep (ofc if you not living at country village at your own fazenda). if cats number is > 3 - then empirically, they start to rule all over the place, and you became just.. an appendage grade, smth like that. I have a faith in this :P

Yes, I only now realize that it is too much for a house with a yard 😂

Honestly, we don't need a lot of things ... We just want more ... more ... 🙄
Yes, you're right about three ... That's the maximum .... Besides a lot of cats, I have four dogs. Sister took two from the street ...

Luckily, we live in the countryside, so long live freedom to cats and houses..

So now we say for ourselves that we are feeders and drinkers 😂😂😂

o-oo! same with me. I'd be happy to make a few pics for you, but probably you will not find it intresting, as 99% of them are in Russian, hehe. I am sure we will meet again on the pages of this new community. it is a promising place... cant be so that people stopped reading, I refuse to believe that!

no, no, this is not what I meant at all, dear Mel. I mean, its intresting to watch what others Libraries consist of (if I got you right), but having a look at my shelves, I suspect you will not see any known names, authors, novells, you cant read the titles etc - so, it will not be very intresting for you (non Russian speaker) to watch / to examine such a pic. that's what I meant. PS. 4 of the night, and I am still not in bed. shhhhhame. I am going to sleep. see you.

I understand what you meant. I was only thinking of how interesting my own bookshelves might be to someone in St. Petersburg. Even someone who could read the titles. Russians are much more cultured than most Americans.
And seeing photos of books is not as satisfying as being able to pull one from the shelves and look inside, even when the words are written in a language you don't understand!
