Science Fiction Fashion: Pockets or no Pockets?
I hadn't noticed and wasn't aware of this Star Trek detail about pockets for outfits but I do know in Doctor Who The Doctor's pockets have been shown to have similar dimensional properties as the TARDIS.

Some sci-fi tries to to look more realistic than others; those will feature clothing with pockets. Star Wars, Farscape, and RDM Battlestar Galactica fit this category. Other sci-fi tries to project a future that's closer to uptopian but not as realistic. The various Star Trek series and movies fit that category.
