My FungiFriday Report Card: September 25 2020

(Edited)

Friday.

The first rain in weeks fell over night and the centigrades briefly dipped into the single digits.

The change in the atmosphere, after weeks of consitent dry heat, had me go for several nice walks today.

In the morning I went out to immediately fulfill the Friday mission: That's finding some fungi in the forest. I wasn't too lucky with finding some new specimen but I did manage to check on some of the previous Fridays' finds.

The birch brackets from last week's post have grown a decent bit in the past seven days and a side-by-side comparison illustrates the development of their typical shape even further.

Eventually they might all be turning into beautiful platypuses like this one...

...which has also developed quite well compared to last week.

The pigskin poison puffball with its parasitic boletes we found three weeks ago isn't doing as well, though.

And I might have said I wasn't too lucky with finding new specimen, but that doesnt mean I found nothing at all.

I think we're dealing with some panther caps here. They're actually quite poisonous and easily confused with some edible look-alikes.

It might not be as impressive as a birch bracket bursting through tree bark, but the way this mushroom has lifted an entire section of the ground is still pretty amazing!

This concludes the fungi agenda but it's not the last curious find of the day.

In the afternoon, as I walked around the hidden lake in the forbidden forest I stumbled upon a little piece of almost ancient technology.

In all seriousness, this bulb must have been in the woods for possibly decades. It's significantly bigger than a regular old incandescent bulb and has peculiar irregularities in the glas. The bulb is intact, though, and it appears to still hold a vacuum.

I carefully cleaned it a little bit and decoratively placed it next to my favourite spot by the lake.

It was a great day with plenty of fresh air, curious finds and calm thoughts.

Autumn is approaching with haste and it's a little bit scary to think about the coming winter. Right now I'll just focus on the excitement of a changing season, the sunsets get longer as the days get shorter.

Thanks for your time!

Wow, great report again! 👌
I Recognized immediately the platypuses like fungi. Haven't you got any googlyeye in your pocket (maybe for the bulb?) 😋

Thanks!!

I would hope you recognized it, you named it a platypus after all.

I did actually carry some googlies with me, but I guess the bulb just didn't speak to me in that way, maybe next time...
