In the realm of philosophy, spirit is synonymous with soul. Peripatetic philosopher Abu Ali bin Sina divides the human soul into three parts, namely the plant soul, the animal soul and the human soul. The animal soul has three powers, namely the power to eat, the power to grow, and the power to reproduce. The vegetable soul has two powers, namely the locomotion and the power to absorb. The human soul has a thinking power which is called reason. Intellect is what makes human beings more than animals and plants.

However, seeing the soul in a maqam manner, for them, the soul is a human dimension that exists between spirit and body. The spirit brings light and the body brings darkness. Spiritual struggle and meaning are carried out to elevate the soul to the spirit and fight the various lower bodily tendencies. The conflict between the spirit and the body appears in the soul. And because the soul is a dimension that occupies a position between the spirit and the body, it always experiences fluctuations in circumstances.

The spirit that comes from the supernatural and transcendent always draws the soul to the true truth, while the material body, it seeks to attract the soul to be always busy with material delights and pleasures. Humans, to be free from the influence of the body must purify the soul. In one approach, the soul after being released from the attachments of the body will move from the heart to the spirit, then move to reach the real truth.
