Grand Fir: Second Chances for Success [Bonsai]

IMG_20200802_122342.jpg

Here, I show one of my coniferous species. The Grand Fir, I have cherished for its smooth, deep green needles, and a spicy aroma that reminds me of Christmas.

In late Spring, I shortened the length of many of the new branch tips. The goal was to increase back-budding, and force shorter branch divisions. I'd like this tree to stay small, with bushier growth.

The cover photo above is from August 5, 2020.

This is the same tree a few weeks later, August 21, 2020.

An entire second set of buds have fully opened up. The yellow needles are in stark contrast to the glossy green ones.

From the side view the tree seems to have only a patchwork of random branches.

Yet, from above, it becomes apparent that every branch is a piece of the puzzle. Each part interlinks to form a complete canopy. No sunlight is wasted.

When I clipped the ends of the tree back in Spring, I was very careful to search for locations of potential undeveloped buds. At the time they will little more than tiny nubs on the underside of the branches.

By pinching the branch just past those marks, the new buds formations tend to appear as natural extensions of the branch, with one extra advantage.

While the previous portion of the removed branch tends to be very long and straight, the new buds cause the connected branch to take on deeper bends, angles, twists, and turns. This can add interesting designs to the shape of the branches and trunk.

Excellent project and well documented!

I really should get inspired by the blockchain bonsai crew and start exploring this practice with my own tree.

Wow, this little guy really did some growing in a couple weeks. Result of hot weather? I need to consider what, if anything, I should do with my little trees before fall.
