Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town, South Africa!

Welcome to Week 7 / Round 1 of the Hive Music Festival! A massive thank you to @edwardstobia for giving us another 3 weeks! I am stoked!

I am going to continue to use this opportunity to share my own original songs! In the first three weeks I did some quite soft, finger-picking songs. For weeks 4 to 6, I started to pick up the tempo and strum a bit. Now that we have 3 more weeks, what choice do I have but to raise the tempo again and rock out about as hard I can within the spectrum of songs I have written?

Today’s song is interesting in that I play it in an alternative tuning DADGAD (as opposed to standard guitar tuning EADGBE). I think a lot of people think that alternative tunings are complicated and best left to the masters, but I think that’s not true at all! DADGAD and some other tunings can be very easy, and they open up a whole new world of creativity for you. There are many benefits to playing in DADGAD, but the way I do it often allows me to have a wider spectrum of notes between very high and very low. I also tend to play the chords on three strings and allow the other 3 strings to ring open in the root notes of the key. This makes it almost sound like 2 guitars instead of one… or at least fuller! Hahaha!

If you play guitar and have never tried DADGAD… I explain the basics in this post so please give it a try! @jasperdick/music-live-original-and-cover

A shout out to @itzchemaya who has been encouraging me to tackle blues and jazz… This song does have some blues elements to it, even if it’s the more up-tempo blues-rock version! I play harmonica in a blues-inspired way, and the chord structure and riffs follow the “rules” of blues as well…

“Who’s Been Messing with my Baby?” tries to describe a man who goes into a black rage of anger when he finds out he has been cheated on, and then ends with regret at how out of control the anger made him… I hope you enjoy it!

Listening back, I seem to have rocked out a bit too hard and my phone struggled to record it without distorting a few times! Haha – sorry for this!

Before I go: Please look out for my weekly cover request post on Thursday! If you make a song request in the comments, and then I attempt the song, you get rewarded with 50% of that post's rewards in HP! Please have a think about what song you would like me to tackle for you?

Lyrics for "Who’s been Messing with my Baby?" by @jasperdick (original)

Well I come home, do I find you?
No I don't what did you do... this time?
I see your phone on the bed
With messages from another man... he's dead!
Who's been messing with my baby?
Who? I should be the only one!
Who's been messing with my baby?
Who? Because he'd better run, run, run!
Who...?!?!

(Harmonica)

Black clouds of thought flow through my head
Are you in another bed? He's dead!
I feel the rage come over me
It's not the way it's supposed to be... He's DEAD!
Who's been messing with my baby?
Who? I'm gonna get my gun!
Who's been messing with my baby?
Who? Because he'd better run, run, run!
Who...?!?!

(Harmonica)

KAKAKA...
Oooh... I just shot my baby...
Oooh... I ran and got my gun...
Ooooh... I just shot the other man too...
OOOOHH... WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Letra de "Who's been Messing with my Baby?" de @jasperdick (original)

Bueno llego a casa, ¿te encuentro?
No, no me encuentro, ¿qué has hecho esta vez?

¡Voy a coger mi pistola!
¿Quién se ha metido con mi bebé?
¿Quién? ¡Porque será mejor que corra, corra, corra!
¡¿Quién...?!

(Armónica)

KAKAKA...
Oooh... Acabo de disparar a mi bebé...
Oooh... Corrí y tomé mi arma...
Ooooh... Acabo de disparar al otro hombre también...
OOOOHH... ¿QUÉ HE HECHO?

Goodness me @yetxuni! What time is it in Argentina/Venezuela??? Go to bed! Hahaha!

Please give DADGAD a try - it suits rock songs like Goo Goo Dolls / U2 / etc very nicely. Again, I show each of the 6 main chord shapes (D5, Emin, F#min, Gmaj, Amaj and Bmin) here, which allows you to play most songs: @jasperdick/music-live-original-and-cover

As I mentioned, you only play the chords on three strings and allow the others to play Ds and As like a kind of a second instrument "droning" away... but it sounds good! Haha!

This song portrays a scene that is lived every day worldwide. You convey a lot of the pain of the moment, the guttural part you do is so powerful that it gives more impact to the song.

Thank you for sharing your original pieces in this musical house ;)

Absolutely! My friend @clairemobey recently posted about gender based violence here in South Africa, and I wish that society made it okay for men to talk about their emotions of sadness, fear, guilt and anger before they get out of control... instead, we are often taught to hide all that away and "toughen up".

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have to be in the office all week this week, and there is a baby daughter to not disturb at night, but I will sing you a song from my car in the office parking lot if I have to! Hahaha!

Thank you very much! I wrote it on purpose to try and have a variety of emotions and tempos when I play a set of original songs. Often, when you perform on your own, people who are really listening can tell the difference between the songs, but to the people who aren't really concentrating, you might sort of sound the same to them each time... I try really hard not to! So I will go from something soft and delicate into something more like this one! Hahaha!

The way you play the guitar seemed very interesting to me, and I loved how you play the harmonica. I congratulate you dear friend for this beautiful interpretation. Applause!

There she is! I must still think how to do something that is more jazzy for you. What even is jazz? It seems to be a varied genre that goes from early blues inspiration... to some very complicated stuff...
Instead of having rules... it seems to be about breaking rules!

I believe when jazz first arrived, it was seen as the scandalous kind of music! It reminds me of the scenes from "Downton Abbey" where the naughty cousin brings a jazz band to the fancy house run by the Earl and causes quite a stir!
